Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
PAUL M. BURNS, OF FREETOWN, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 81,134, dated August 18, 1868.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,PAUL M. BURNS, of Freetown, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hydraulic Clothes-Washers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof7 reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in a sprinkler, to evenly saturate the clothes with water, for cleansing and bleaching them, and in a device for holding the clothes down in the boiler.
Figure l is a view of a wash-boiler and hydraulic apparatus with my invention applied to it. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my invention.
A Fig. l, is the wash-boiler in common use;
B B', thehydraulic apparatus inside the boiler,
neither of which do I claim. C is the sprinkler. This is a cylindrical tube, perforated with holes a a', &c., in the lower half 5 D D D D',
arms for holding down the clothes.
Operation: The wash-boiler A and the hydraulic apparatus B B' being constructed in the well known manner, with the sprinkler slipped onto the tubes B B of the hydraulic apparatus, the operation of my invention may be noted. The holes being in the lower half of the sprinkler, the water is evenly showered on the clothes, and the arms prevent them from rising, as will be observed without further speciiication.
In this invention I do not claim the hydraulic apparatus as my invention, neither do I confine to any particular forni or number of arms to hold down the clothes. They may be made as shown, or in any practical form.
I am aware of the subject of the United States Patent No. 62,084, wherein a perforated partition is employed to keep the clothes in the boiler below the holes of discharge of the hot water upon them, and therefore I make no claim to the invention described in such patent. I employ the arms D in the place of such a partition, such arms being productive of an advantage not attainable by such partition-that is, they admit of a stirrer being therewith driven between the clothes, and of their being turned or moved about therebya matter which is of great importance. Therefore,
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cylindrical sprinkler C', applied to a wash-boiler, and provided with holes a on the lower half of its surface, and arms D for holding down the clothes, the whole arranged and operating substantially as described.
