IMPROVEMENT mi wAsn-BolLERs.
. The Schedule referred to inuthese Letters Patent: and making p't of the same.
Totali whom fitmafl/ conce/rn Be it known that I,` CHARLES W". APOWELL, of Bloomfield, in the county of Hartford and State of Connection t, have invented a new and useful Improvep ment in Wash-Boiler; and I` do hereby declare that fthe following-,isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, which willuenableothers skilled lin the art to i makeand use!thesamafreierence being had tothe accompanying drawingforming part ot' this specication. p
This invention relatesto a new and useful improvement in` appaitusiforwashing' clothes, and consists in a framework, made of perforated metal or woven =wire, constructed in site and shape to iit into an ordinary wash-boiler, with slides and `water-Ways therein, arrangedas hereinaftermore fully described.
Inwthe accompanying drawing- Figure lrepresents a` vertical longitudinalV section of the apparatus taken on lthe line :t :t of `iig 2r Figure-2 is a verticalcross section of the boiler taken on theline y y of lig. 1. i. 1
Figure 3 a modification of iig. 2, showing a--dif- Similar` letters of V reference indicate corresponding frame or perforated Vcssel, i`n which are Y he bottomfB offthis frame is open-work, except sing at the endsa rIhe end piecesBf extend upto the` top oi' the )frame A,:the"shape f thejsame being 'seen in the cross sections. i i
The edges of these ends are"turned inward, so as to support slides, one or more, on'one orboth of' the sides oi a form, to correspond with the circles O Q,
. Between theends thereis au open space,.D," into which the water-in the boiler `rises and` is forced upward by the pressureof thesteam below,` and vis dscharged onto: the clothes through the dat tubes E E, Vor either of them. Y p' s p i F represents rings, which are attached to the circular slides: There may he two sets of slides, and in this example of my invention I show two slides on each side, oneof which is perforated, and the .other made of whole tins,'or othersuitable metal, the latter of which form the tubes'E E;
The clothes to be washed are placed. -iu the lboiler outside the circles C O, so that the water which is raised will he dischargeddirectly onto them, and de Ascend' to the bottom of the boiler to be again raised by the steam, and so on as long as may be required for a thoroughv cleansing of the clothes.
A circulation is thus kept up through -the clothes, but which circulation may he regulated and controlled by removing or adjusting the slides, either one or both, ou either or both sides.
`Instead of having perforated slides, as described, therernayr be fixed perforated partitions with tin slides, `to which the rings are attached, as seen in ii f. 3.
,I do not couiie myself to any particular number or arrangement of the slides.
Having thus described my invention, Y
I elaimasnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The'perforated frame A, circles G O, open bottom' B, opelrspaoe D, and adjustable or removable discharge-tubes E E, constructed and arranged with slides, to operate substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination of the perforated frame A with circular slides and removable discharge-tubes, ar ranged substantially as and for the purposes described.
rIhe above specification of my invention signed by me this day` of 1871.
