THOMAS MCMULLIN, IRA N. MENDENHALL, AND MILES MENDEN- HALL, JR., O1" OSGOOD, INDIANA.
Letters .Patent No. 89,325, dated Apr/il 27, 1869.
WASH-Bomen The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of theA same.
To all whom 'it 'ma/y concern'.-
Be it known that we, THOMAS MCMULLIN, IRA N. MENDENHALL, and MILES MENDEXHALL, Jr. of 0sgood, in the county of Ripley, andState of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Washer; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had' to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a perspective of one side, with the ends removed;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the other side;
Figure 3 is a perspective of one of the ends; and
Figure 4, a side elevation of our device for washboiler.
Similar lettersA indicate like parts in all the gures.
Our device relates to a device for covering to be used in connection with a common wash-boiler, whereby clothing may be thoroughly cleansed simply by the action of the water, when boiling.
rIhe peculiarities of our invention consist in con- 4 structing the said device or covering in sections, ar-
ranged to operate substantially as hereinafter set forth.
'lo enable others skilled inthe art to which our in'- vention appertaius, to make and use the same, we will now describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings- A A represent pieces of metal, bent at right angies, as shown in iigs. 1 and 2. Said pieces of lnetal are designed for the top of our device, and may be about two-thirds the length of an ordinary stove-boiler.
The part A is provided atits centre with th'e npght tube C, which terminiates at the upper end in two spouts b b.
It will be observed that the ends of the top portion of section A are turned over, so as to admit of receiving A', sliding beneath them. This feature is shown at :n z, iig. l.
It will also be seen that section A is provided with a recess, or slot, (l, sutliciently large to receive the tube G.
I) represents a wire lid placed over the tube G, as seen in figs. l and 4.
E is a spiral spring, and b', a movable ring, both encircling the tube C, as fully shown in fig. 4.
The object of this arrangement will be 'made apparent presently.
B B represent the end pieces of our boiler-cover. We make said pieces in two parts, one overlapping the other, and pivoted together near their outer end, so as to allow ofthe parts being contracted or expanded,
together.
We provideone of them with a scmicircular slot, y, while the other has an incision made at its inner end, and the tongue thus formed is bent down and under the slot g.
The lower and inner sides of sections A A' are bent upward, so as to form a groove for the ends B B to slide into.
This feature is partially shown at letter h, fig. 2.
a e a represent apertures in top of sections A A' and end pieces B B.
The operation of our invention is as follows:
Having previously prepared thesuds in the boiler, our cover is so adjusted as to snit the size of said boiler. The clothing is now placed between the wire frame D and the covering, the spiral spring and movable ri'ng serving to keep a pressure on the clothing, and thus prevent them from being displaced. As the water boils it will ascend through the tube C, and be emptied over the clothing, by means of the spouts b b, returning to the boiler through the holes a a a., and up again, through the tube C, upon the clothing, and so on until the clothing has been thoroughly washed.
Having thus described our invention,
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The wire frame D, in combination with the spiral spring E and movable ring b', arranged to operate substantially as described.
2. Au adjustable false bottom for any wash-boiler, consisting of the inet-al pieces A A and end pieces B B, in combination with wire frame D, spiral spring E, movable "ing b, and tube C, provided with spouts b b, arranged and operating substantially inv the manner and for the pur-pose described.
own, we atlix our signature in presence of two witnesses.-
-in order more eilectually to bind and hold the parts In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our
