Description
tl'ntcd gendre IRA A. NEWHALL, or ceooKED CREEK, PNN'SYLVANIA.
Letters .Patent No. 90,462, dated May 25, 1869.
rMPRovEn wesnmcwmcmnn.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ire@` A. N EWHALL, of Crooked Creek, in the county of V'Iioga, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and improved Washing- Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make aud use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is aivertical longitudinal section of my improved machine, taken through the'line :v-x, iig.- 2.
Figure 2 is a detail cross-section of the same, part being broken away to show the construction.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish a simple', convenient, and eective washing-machine, doing. its work quickly and well, and -without injuring the articles being washed; and
It consists in-the construction and combination of the various parts of the machine, as hereinafter more fully described. K
A represents the box or tub of the machine, which is4 made rectangular in its general form, and the bottom of which is made concave or semi-cylindrical in form, as shown in fig. l.
B are two rubber frames, which are placed, one in each end of the box A', and the end-bars of which are pivoted, below their middle points, to the sides of the tub A. i
The rubber boards B are formed by pivoting the ends of a system Iof rollers, b, to the end-bars b2, as shown in g. l.
The movements of the roller-frame B are limited by the stops or strips O, attached to the sides of the box A, near its ends, in such positions that the endbars b2 of the roller-frames B, when in a vertical position, may rest against them.
The lower ends of the stops G are bevelled o', as shown in iig. 1, so that the roller-frames may take a position parallel with the swinging roller-frame D, when said roller-frame is swung against them.
The roller-frame D is formed by pivoting two rows of rollers cl to the side-bars cl3 of said frame.
d* is the pivoting-rod, which passes through the side-bars di', and the ends of which work in notches in the upper edges of the sides of the box A, as shown in iig. 2.
The side-bars dz are extended upward, and their upper. ends are connected by a cross-bar, da, which serves as a handle for operating the machine.
The lower side of the lower cross-barof the swinging rubber frame D, is rounded oii to correspond with the curve of the bottom of the box A, so that the clothes may not get between the said cross-bar and the bottom, and be worn or injured.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y The combination of the roller-frames B, pivoted, below their centres, to the side of the box A, the endstrip's O having their lowerends bevelled, and the yframe D, provided with two rows of rollers d, all arranged aud operating as described, for the purpose specified. A
