TU ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WELLYNGTON GREEN, of Kinzua, in the county of Warren, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Washing Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 ism. longitudinal section of my yimproved machine, taken through the line y y, iig. 2.
Figure 2 is a. cross-section of' the same, taken through the line x 1:, tig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved washing machine, so constructed and arranged as to do thewashing quickly and thoroughly, and with a small outlay of power; and it consists in a box constructed with a. close-fitting cover, furnished with slatsland scalloped pieces, and pivoted to stationary supports, and in the combination ot' a weight-box with the' pivoted box; the whole being constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the frame upon which the machine stands, and which should be of sufficient l give a stable support to the machine. To the sides oi' the frame A are attached the lower ends of the uprights B, in the upper ends of which are formed bearings for the pivoting pins of the machine. C is the washing-box, which is made rectangular in form, as shown in iigs. 1. and 2. To the bottom ofthe box C are attached crossslats D, as shown in tig. 1. El E2 is the cover of the box, the part Ex of which is stationary, and the part E2 is movable, and moves buck and forth in grooves formed in the sides of the box C, as shown in figs. 1 and 2. It' desired the edge of the movable part Ez may be hinged to the edge of the stationary part El, and may shutdown upon the rabbeted edges of the side boards ofthe box. To the ends ofthe box C are attached scalloped pieces F, either in a. vertical or horizontal position, as shown in the drawings. To the inner side of the forward ond ofthe box may, if desired, be attached a grooved wash-board, G, as shown in figs. 1 and 2` for use, if required, for rubbing the dirtier parts of the garments. To the sides of the box C,just below thc pivoting pins, are attached downwardly-projecting arms H, to the lower ends of which is attached a box, I, for the reception of weights to balance the weight of' the water and clothes in the box C, so that the said box may oscillare more easily. To one end of the box I, or to one of the arms H. is pivoted the end of the handle J, by means of which the machine is operated.
In using the machine the water, soap, and clothes are placed in the box C, and the movable part- E2 of the cover tightly closed; the machine is then oscillated by means of the handle J, throwing the clothes from one end of the box to the other, over the slats D, and against the scalloped end-pieces F, washing in a. very short time. The dirty water may then be drawn oil and the clothes sudsed and ri manner.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The box C, constructed with a close-fitting cover, El E2, with slats D upon its bottom, with scalloped pieces F upon one or both ends, and pivoted to stationary supports B, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set Iforth.
2. The combination of the balance-weigbt box I, with the oscillatin and described, and for the purpose set forth.
ength and breadth to the clothes clean nsed in the same g-box C, substantially as herein shown WELLINGTON GREEN.
