Description
@met me; @anni ffm- RGBERT E. DOWNIE AND C. JOHNSON, OF DELAVAN, "WISCNSINv Letters Patent No. 63,488, dated Aprile, 1867.
IMPROYED WASHING MACHINE.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, ROBERT E. DOWNIE and'H. C. JOHNSON, of Delavan, in the county of Walworth, and State oi' Wisconsin, have invented a new and improved Washing Machine; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the`*accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to the class of-washing machines in which-a series of rubbers is attached tota pendulous supporting frame, whereby they are moved forth and back upon a corresponding series of stationary rubbers or rollers for the purpose of washing theinterpo'sed garments. "Ihe invention more particularly consists in the method of adjusting the` stationary rollers 'by eccentric-shafts resting upon the bottom of the tub, and supporting Yat both ends the frame in which the Stationary rollers are journalled.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure l is a longitudinal vertical sectional elevation of our improved washing machine taken throughxx.
Figure 2 is a top plan View of the same.
Letters of' 'like name and kind refer to like parts in each oi' the figures.
A represents a box of suitable dimensions made oi' wood, sheetmetal, or other suitable material, rectangular in form, mounted and supported on four suitably-inclined posts, B B B B. The lower ends of. the said posts B stand out toward the end of the suds trough orbox A, so as to form a bearing upon the door nearly or quite eren with the end of the box A, for the purpose of preventingr the suds box from tilting up when in operation. C may represent any suitable number of rollers, theends of' which are provided with journals which have bearings in two side-pieces, D D, located at the sides of' the middle of the suds box A. The rollers C are located in the side-pieces D D, in such a manner as to form a concave bed of rollers. At each end of the sidepieces D D are eccentric-shafts, E E, which have bearings in the said side-pieces, which are for the purpose of elevating or lowering the side-pieces or bed of rollers, as inay be desired. In the centre, and upon the'outsidc of the side-pieces D D, and next to the inside walls of the suds box A, are grooves, e e, cut transversely with the side-pieces. In these grooves are dove-tailed tongues, a a, secured, which extend-upward above the upper edge of the side-pieces D D. In these grooves ce, and to thedovAe-tailed tongues are fitted the upright standards F F, in such a manner that they may be removed as'desired. 'Theseuprights may be held in position by means of pins passing through the lower ends of the upright-s F and tongues a (but-not shown in the drawings.) At the upper ends of the uprights F F is a'rock-shaft, G, to which .is attached the pendent bar II. The lower end of this pendent bar H is connected, by means of a pivot-joint, n, to the rock-bar K oi' the rubber I. The sidepieces of this rubber I are made something in the form of the segment of a circle` to which are secured, in a transverse direction, the bevelled rubber bars J. L is a roller or handle secured to the two side-pieces of the rubber I, by which the machine is operated by moving the rubber alternately back and forth, and to dhich great power and force may be applied in cleansing the fabric. Whenvthe machine is not in use for washing, the uprights may be taken out, when the rock-shaft will become disengaged, and all may be packed in the suds box, which is provided with a cover, and used as a table. I
Having thus described .our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-isl. The eccentric-shafts E E, employed for adjusting the vertical position of the roller-frame D D, and resting upon the bottom of the tub, so as to sustain the said frame at both ends, substantially as described and represented.
2. In combination with the above, we claim the removable uprights F F, pendent bar H, and rubber I, all arranged in the manner and For the purpose specified.
ROB'I. E. DOWNIE, H. C. JOHNSON.
