Description

@with tetes @anni @fitta EBENEZER W. LOWE, OF ALMOND, NEW YORK. Letters .Patent No. 70,343, dated October 29, 1867.
IMPROVED WASHING MACHINE.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON CERN Be it known that I, EBENEZER W- LOWE, of the tovvn'oi` Almond, in the county of Alleghany, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing Machines, and the following is a full, clear, and exactedescription of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part ot' this specication, in which* 1 l Figure 1 represents aperspective view of the machine, showing the operating parts.
Figure 2shows` alview o'f one ofthe double-acting springs.
My invention consists in the construction and mode of arranging the'springs, so that the washing serrated cylinder, and the roller-bed framecan both yield to any irregular quantity of clothing. The force of the press- Aure being made so as to be adjusted by strrup-rods, with screws and lever-nuts on the outside and underneath the double central spring, the cylinder and rollerframe being so arranged as to be easily removed from the tub or box by simply nnhitching the stirrup-rods,
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe it more fully, referring to the drawings, and to the letters marked thereon.
The tub or box A, in which the washing apparatus is placed, is made of boards in the ordinary manner, and supported, at a suitable height to-be operated conveniently, on legs B B. Inside the box A is fitted a frame, C C, so as to move easily. At the corners are vertical studs c c, extending to nearly the top of the box A, on the top of which are secured the ends oi' the springs D D, the centres of which have curves ci d, which are tted to and rest on verticalrpbsts b 6, which are secured to the ends ofthe box A. In the central part of the frame C C is a. series of six rollers, ede, the two middle rolls being depressed, so that the bed formed by the rollers conforms to the curve ofthe rotating cylinder E, placed above them. The washing or rubbing-cylinder E is constructed by placing two or more heads of wood on a metal shaft, F, 'and covering the periphery with round, smoothf'rods fffj, lattened'on the inside, thus forming a serrated roller, hollow inside. In both sides of the suds-hox Aare vertical slits a a, for the journals of the shaft F to run in,'the slits a a being lined with sheet metal, gg, to prevent the wearing of the sides as the cylinder E works up and down while being operated by the crank-handle G. On both ends of the cylinder-shaft F, on the journals outside of the box A, are stirruprods H H, extending down below the bottom of' the suds-box. Under the centre of the box is secured the spring Lthere being holes or eyes in both ends, through which the stirruprods H H pass,'they having screwthreads z'z'fcu't on about one-third of their length, on which are iittedleve1'-uuts h t for the purpose of adjusting 7 the pressurebetween the rotating cylinder E andtherollers e e in the yielding frame C C.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-
I claim the combination of' the spring I, stirrnp-rods H H, lever-nuts hilt, as described, with the washingcylinder as constructed, and the frame C C, as suspended on the springs D D, so as tooperate substantially Vin the manner herein described, for the purposes specified. l
lIn testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name in the presence 0f- EBENEZER W. LOWE.
