Description

L HUTCHlNSON.
Washing, Machine.
Patented Oct. 28, 1843.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAME S HUTCHINSONOF MARTINSBURG, VIRGINIA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 3,321, dated October 28, 1843.
a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is an isometrical view, Fig. 2, a vertical section.
The nature of my invention consists in combining what I denominate a cylinder of rollers with an elastic movable concave, the whole being placed above a furnace and. boiler.
The frame of my machine is composedof four legs connected by braces (a) at top which form the sides of the tub; inside of these braces there is a metal reservoir ((2) for containing Water, the bottom of which is cylindrical, and has a furnaceextending its whole length underneath its center, in form an oblong box (0) with a door (d) at one end, and a smoke pipe (6) ascending from the other. Above the reservoir (5) a concave bed (f) is fixed composed of a series of slats, which are connected together side by side by staples so as to be flexible and attached to the sides of the frame (a) on each side. Near where the concave is joined to the side, a roller (cl) isplaced, for the purpose of rolling clothes on as they are washed. The concave is raised in the center by means of levers (7c) the fulcrum of which are posts projecting up from the frame, the levers are connected with a roller (2') that runs across from one port to the other, when the handle of these levers is borne down, the concave is raised; an additional lever (76) can be affixed to the rod (0') which connects the above named levers; the
handleof which stands in an opposite direction, and which serves the same purpose. Qver the center of the concave stands the cylinder of rollers, constructed in the followlng manner: An axle on whichit turns has a circular head at each end, around the periphery of which are holes in the face, inside, on which the journals of a series of grooved rollers (Z) turn; on the end of this cylinder shaft outside the boX there is a pinion (m) gearing into "a wheel (n) on the shaft of which is a crank by which it is turned.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The soap and water is put into the machine and a fire is kindled in thefurnace beneath, and the water heated; after which, if the articles are large that are to be washed, they are rolled upon one of the rollers (g), and the end passed down under the cylinder as the clothes come out on the other side they are wound onto the opposite roller-in passing under the cylinder as it runs over them the rollers turn so as not to wear the clothes" out, and the concave is made to press them up against the cylinder with any required force by hearing down on the handle. The levers turning each way are made to change hands with as the clothes are carried under each way.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination of the flexible concave and cylinder of rollers constructed and arranged substantially as herein described, having a reservoir and furnace in which it is placed, arranged in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
