Description

u'itr tang glatt-fat @fitte JOHN e. BAILEY, OF. HILLsD-ALE, MroHIeAN.l Laim Patent No'. 66,775, daal-zaait 1c, 1867.
IMPROVED WASHING MACHINE.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERIT: Y
' Be it known that I, JOHN G. BAILEY, of Hillsdale, in the county of Hillsdale, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful improvementl in lashing Machinei Vand I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and cxatdescription thereof, which will enable othersskilled in 'the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part oi'v this specication, in Which- Figure 1 is a top View of my improved machine.
Figuic 2 is a side view ofthe same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved machine by means of whichthe washing may be easily, quickly, and thoroughly done; and it consists in the combination of la small roller and inclined apron with the iluted cylinders and with the box; in vthe combination of the springs and adjusting levers with the box and with the journalsof one of the tintedl cylinders; the whole being constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the box of the machine, a convenient size for which is three feet in length, eighteen inches in Width, and one foot in depth. The ends and bottom of the box A may for convenience be made inclined, as Vshosvn in` fig.,2. B is a cylinder, the journals of which revolve in bearings insthe'sides of the box A.. The surface of lthc'eylinder D is grooved or tinted similar to the grooving of an ordinary rubbing-board." 'lo the projectingv end of one of the journals of the cylindcrB is attached the crank C, by which the machine is operated. -`D is a cylinder, the journals of which revolve in horizontal slots in-the sidesV ofthe boze-A. 'The surface of the vcylinder D is'grooved or luted in the s ame manner as the cylinder B,".`the tlu'ting heing'ab'out one-half the size of that of the cylinder D, as shown in the drawings. 'l'he cylinderDv is held forwartdagainst the cylinder B bythe springs E, the free `ends of which rest and press against the rear sides off'the journals of the said I cylinder D, as shown in figs. l and 2. The lower ends et' the Vsprings Eare securely attached to the levers F, the lower ends of which are pivoted tothe sides of the box and their upper ends pass through the keepers Gr attached to the sides lofthe bex A. Bymeans o f the springs E the cylinder D is enabled to adjust itself to the varying thickness of the clothes passing through the machine, and by varyingfihe position of the levers F in the keepers G, the positionof the cylinders may be adjusted by means of thc wedge-shaped keys I-I, according to the quantity of clothes passing through the machine, and according to the amount of pressure desired to be applied to them. I is a small roller pivoted to the sides of `the box, A beneath the' cylinders B and D, a little in the rear of the vertical line passing through the line of contact between the said cylinders B and D. J is an inclined apron extending from the bottom of the box to the lower part of roller I, as shown in dotted lines in iig. 2. The roller I and apron J are intended to guide the clothes in their passage through the machine. The clothes `to be washed may be passed between the cylinders B and D either upward or downward, as may be desired; and the eifect of the different-sized iiuting upon the said cylinders is to rub, squeeze, andpound the clothes being washed, Ywashing them clean in a very short time.
Vhat I claim as new, and dcsire'to secure by Letters Patent, is-v 1. The combination of the small roller I and apron J with the iluted cylinders Band D and with the box A,`substantially as herein shown and described and for thepurpose set forth.
2.`The combination of the springs E and levers F with each other and with the journals ofthe roller D and box A, substantially as herein shown and described and for the purpose set forth. y g
JOHN G. BAILEY.
