Description
@nite-h ftats @anni @fitta M. S.V FELLOWSLOF LIVONIA, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 65,362, dated June l4, 1867.
@te tlghirle tefcmh in im tinte litters nient mit making nntt'uf tige sume.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, M. S. FELLOWS, of Livonia, in the county of Livingston, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing Machines, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specication, in which the figure is a vertical section of my invention.
This invention relates to that class of washing machines having a corrugated bed and a suspended reciprocating frame, carrying rollers or their equivalent; and its nature consists mainly in arranging one rubbing roller in a suspended frame, which may be reciprocated over` a corrugated bed, the inner end of the frame also having a hinged roll, that acts as a pounder upon the clothes by pressing them, at each alternate reeiprocation, up against a dash-board at the opposite end of the machine.
To enable others to make and usev my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
I provide a suitable case or tank, A, supported by four legs, Z. The bottom B is fitted to the sides of the case water-tight. I apply an auxiliary bottom, B., above the other, leaving a water-space, w, between the two. The upper side of the inner bottom is slightly corrugated, as shown, which is designed more especially to retain the fabric in place while it is being operated upon by the rubbing roller R. There is a standard, s, secured to each side of the case, and a cross-round, 1', at the top. From this round is suspended the rubbing-frame F by the pendants P.- The pounder-roll D is hinged to the frame F, as shown in the drawing, by the strap or bar t at each end, which permits the opposite end of the frame at f to be raised or lowered while this roll D still rests upon the clothes, and, as the frame Fis thrown from the operator, that rollvor pounder is forced against the clothes lying inthe angle of the dash-board d and the end of the case. This board d is fitted in gains in thc sides of the case, therefore may be removed at any time, which would be desirable if a. horse-blanket, quilt, or breadth of carpeting, Ste., were to be washed, so as to permit a portion ofthe fabric to be placed in the machine at a time.
'It will be seen that the operator may regulate the downward pressure upon the rubbing-rollerR as she may desire, by reason ofthe roller being arranged between the joint a, connecting the frame F to the pendants P and the handleLrod f. The object of the water-space w is that there may be a supply of water in the tank, and at the same time not have a great deal on the rubbing-board. When the water is put in the tank it will rise and cover the centre of the inner bottom B. The clothes then become thoroughly saturated, and when the frame F is started the water is forcedthrough the openings z', and will rise in each end of the tank under the bottom B', thereby furnishing a proper supply to the fabric which is being operated upon, and at the saine time not in such quantities as to slop out of the machine. There may be a short section of an ordinary washboard placed in the open end of the machine at y, if desired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the roller F, hinged pounder-roller D, corrugated concave B', and dash-board d, in connection with the fountain or supplychamber 1v, as and for the purposes set forth.
