De it known that I, IVLLTAU BICKNELL, of Hartford, in the coun ty of Oxford, and State of Maine, have invented a new and improved "Washer and lVringcr; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a central longitudinal vertical section of my invention.4

This invention relates to a machine for washing and lwringing clothes, and consists in the use of a tub in which a perforated reciprocating daslier is arranged, and the removable cover of which is iiuted on the under side, so that the clothes in the tub can be pressed between the flasher and the cover, and are then submerged in water, and pressed again until they are perfectlyr clean. They can then be wrang by pressing them between the dasher and the cover, and securing the former in pla-ce, gradually increasing the pressure until the water is removed from the clothes. AThe covei` can be removed Vif desired, and be used as a wash-board.

A represents a frame or bed, made of wood or other suitable material of suflicientl strength to support a cylindrical or other tub, B, which is made of wooden stares and bottom in the usual manner, and has a smooth bottom, a, as is clearly shown in g. 1. C is the cover of the tub B, and is tinted on the under side, so that it caubc used for a wash-boarcl when taken out of the tub. It rests on a shoulder formed on the inside of the tub,

Aand can be held down by a rod, D, which passes through mortises in two-uprights of the frame A. Eis a perforated dasher, made of wood or other suitable material, and of suchmshape that it will tit well in the tub, and can slide up and dow-n between the cover C and bottom a. Two rods, F, are secured to the dasher, and extend through the cover C above the tub, and are connected at their upper ends by a cross-head, G. The latter is provided with an upright rod, b, which is pivoted to the end of a lever, H, which is hinged to an upright, c, of the frame A. By moving the levcr the dasher is raised and lowered, and when water is put into the tub, and the clothes to be washed placed upon the dasher, and the cover held down by the rod D, the machine is set in motion. The dasher will then alternately press the clothes against the cover and submerge the same under water, and this process can be continued until the clothes are perfectly cleaned. A faucet, d, close to the bottom of the tub, serves to withdraw the water from the same. For wringing, the clothes are pressed between the dasher and cover, and the former is held up by a rod, e, which is hinged to the` free end of the lever I-I, and which is provided with a hook at its lower end, whereby it can be made to catch in notehesff, arranged in the upright c, as shown, which permit that the pressure uponthe clothes is increased or decreaseda-t will.

What 'I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with the tub B of the fiuted removable cover C and perforated dasher E, all made and operating substantially as and for the purpoase herein shown and described.

2. The dasher E and cover C, in combinationwith the rods F and b, lever H, hook e, and rack f, all made and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
