No, 121,307. I Patented Nov- 28,1871. ef Jaw/Z.

AM murmur/10mm: m M x (omen/var r-Ramvx/ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES ABBOT, OF FITCHBURG, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs ABBOT, of Fitchburg, in the coimty of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section of my improved washing-machine taken on the plane of the line 0 c, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a ver tical longitudinal section of the same taken on the plane of the line k k, Fig. 1. 7
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in the improvement of washing-machines, as hereinafter fully described and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
A in the drawing represents the suds-box of the machine. It is made of suitable size, narrower at the top than bottom, so that its sides a. a
are inclined as in Fig. 1. The bottom I) of the suds-box is curved to be concave on the inner side so as just to admit the sweep of the dash er. (1 is a longitudinal trough secured under the bottom 12, which latter is perforated above said trough to discharge the settling particles of the suds into the same. The entire suds and water can be withdrawn by opening a cook or faucet, e, at one end of the trough. f f are the legs or supports of the suds-box. B is the dasher, made of horizontal and upright rods with intervening meshes, as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. It is secured between two upright arms or bars, 9 g,
which are, by means of projecting gudgeons hh, pivoted to the ends of the suds-box. Their upper ends project above the suds-box and carry a metallic handle, i, between them. This handle is heavy enough and arranged at such height that it will balance the dasher and facilitate the operation of the same. For lighter work the handle 1' can be set further down, and with this view the arms 9 are perforated to permit such adjustment of the handle. The suds box is closed on top by a jointed hinged cover,j, through which clothes can be introduced on both sides of the dasher. The inclined sides a of the box serve to throw the clothes back into the suds after the dasher has compressed them.
The perforated dasher, made, as shown, of upright and horizontal rods, is very efi'ective, Without being the least injurious to the clothes. Being balanced, it can be operated with ease. As the suds will be automatically liberated of sediments the machine will require less water on a given quantity of clothes, and consequently, also, less soap than any other machine.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of suds-box A having inclined sides a and concave perforated bottom I), the longitudinal trough d having faucet c, the dasher B made of rods attached between perforated bars 9 g, and the balance-handle i, all arranged in a washing-machine, as and for the purpose set forth.
