ALLEN GREGG, OF SPRINGBOROGH, OHIO, VASSIGrNOR TO HIMSELE AND PERRY GREGG, OF SAME PLACE;
Letters Patent No. 106,576, dated VAagust, 187
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN GREGG, of Springborongh, in the connty of Warren in the State of Ohio, .have invented a new and useful Improve-ment in 1vVaslring-Machines; and I doV hereby declare that the following is a full and exact vdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure' l is a perspective'view of my' improved washing-machine, and
Figure 2 represents a. central transverse vertical section of the same, Vtaken at :v x of iig. l.
The object of my invention is to turnish such a combination of devices as to cleansethe clothes-.hy-`
repeated compressing of the boiling suds through the articles being washed, as hereinafter` explained.
A denotes the wash-trib, and" B, the furia :e beneath it, the latter being connected tothe former by the metalbottom of the t'ub.
The furnace-top serves as the central portion of the bottoni` of the tub into which the suds and clothes are placed.
Within the -tnb there are two perforated wings, w
w,snspended hy their arms a a from rods r fr, supported by nprights u lu, secured to. thel sides of the tub. Near-the endsof the tub there are two perforated .partitionsdl p', thelatter being firmly tixedand the former is hinged atits' top to the cleats C, one of the cleats being firmly fastened oil-each side of the tub, seen in tig. l.
L L denote two bentrods, one of which is connected by loop-bolt hinge-joints with each of the wings w, as seen in fig. 2.
These bent rods L pass through the loop Vin the lower end of 4a link, which is secured in a slot of handlever M by a metal pin, as `represented in thedraivlll S. t one end of =the wash-tub a wash-board, I, is secnred,'as represented in fig. 1.
When it is desired to use the wash-board the perforated hinged partition p is .raised upon its hinge, which giresfre'e access to the clothes, represented viu tig. 1, and denoted by the-letter N;
The furnace B is provided with a suitable pipe, O. The lever M isl hinged centrally at one side of the tub, and the slot through which the link S is inserted .is elongated so as togve free play to the link when working the lever M up and down by the hands of the operator.
llhe clothes to be washed are placed between the wings p and p.' and the wings w, which are suspended, as above described; and the operation is eiected by continuously raising the lever M and forcing it down which, through the means of the hinged. rods L and link S, will compress the clothes and force the suds through them, and thence through the pertbrations of'the partitions p pl The action ot' the-water in returning to the central part of the t-ub will cause .the bulk of clothes to be partially .turned over, and in their new position a sec- -ond pressing operation is given, and this process being repeated several times will effectually cleanse the articles from all impurities.4
A suitable spigot may be applied at any propel' location to draw off the water from ,time to time, until the articles are ready to be removed from the tub to a wringer.
By using my machine the double process of washmg and boiling is effected at the same time.'
It will be ,observed that my arrangement of .compressing levers is/ such as to enable the washer to exert great forcein compressing the articles during the last part of the downward movement of the lever M.
Having fully described my new washing-machine,
What I'claim as my invention, and desire to secure hy Letters v`Patent, isl The combination of the perforated suspended pressing wings-w',perforated partitions fp 11', hinged rods AL L, link S, and lever M, arranged and operating conjointly, substantially as and furthe purpose described. ln testimony. whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 31st day of May, A. 1)."1870.' I
ALLEN GREGG.
