Description

@eine tant @anni @Hire IMPROVBD WASHING-MACHINE.
@lla tlgehnh referrer in it tiges httert utmt ma netting gaat nf tige same.
To ALL WHoM 1T MAY ooN'cERN:
Be it known that I, JEIIU MITCHELL, of Newark, in the county of Licking, and- Stute of Ohio, have invented -a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exa'ct description thereof, which will enable others skilled'in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, 'forming a part of this specification.'
This invention'relates to an improved washing-machine, and consists in the insertion of ribs in the end of the machine, between which, and a vibrating weighted dasher, pro'vided with pounders alternating with said ribs, the clothes are squeezed-and elfectually .washed and cleansed. In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved washing-machine, and
Figure 2 lis a vertical section thereof, at line R R of iig. 1.
.Figure 3 is a detail side view of the dasher.
Figure 4 is an end view of the ponnders thereof, and
Figure 5 is a detail sido view of one of the en d ribs.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. l
A is the box, of ordinary construction, except that the bottom, O, Visan inclined plane', as shown bythe dotted lines, iig. 1. D are standards,iirmly secured to theA sides of the box, and projecting above thesame. These standards are 'connected above by the horizontal bnr T, on which are hung the armsHH, in such manner as to swing without any lateral or side motion. From the other ends ofthe arms His suspended the dasher-frame L by its cross-bar S. This fram'e consists of the side bars or pieces E, joined together at one end by the crossbarG, and at its other end (which, when the dasheris in use, is -within the box A,) by the cross-piecesJ and P. Between the cross-pieces J and P is fastened a series of pounders or ribs, I, (at various points, and at equal distances apart from one another,)- from one side of the frame to the other, the broad ends of the side bars E serving for the outside pounders. The ribs I are further secured by the cross-tie or bolt Q passing from one shaft E in the broad end, whereof one end of said bolt is secured through the whole of said ribs I, and has its other end secured in the other shaft E. i r
From the description above given of the manner in which the `frame carrying the ribs I is hung to the posts D of the boxvA', it is manifest that it can be swung within the box A, towards and away from the end A' of said box, moving in n. downward inclined direction upon the inclined bottom thereof, thusforcing the clothes within the box against such end. For a more effectual washing of the clothes such end is provided with aseries of ribs, M, in positions corresponding to the spaces between the ribs I, and it may be observed that the resulting action is a squeezing one,'which, while more ed'eetually cleansing the clothes,` is far less destructive of the fibre or of hard substances, such as buttons attached to said clothes, than ordinary washing-machines. The ribs M are covered by a cap, N, which prevents the water being thrown out when the lid C is removed.
To increase thepower and facilitate the washing process, the -frame L is weighted with the metal cross-bar I". stop or cleat, V, fast to the'bottom O, holds the dasher while the clothes are being removed, or'the dasher can be drawn entirely out of the box, by draw-ing it to the frontend thereof` and tilting the pounders-over the edge.v K is a faucet, for running olf the water.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The frame L,ihung by arms I'IH to bar T, when provided with ribs I I and weight F, in combination with the box A, having standards D, inclined bottom 0, and stationary ribs M, all constructed, arranged, and operating as and for the purpose described. v
vThe above specification of my invention signed by me, this 19th day of August, 1867.
l JEHU MITCHELL.
