T0 ALL WIIOM I'l MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, RICHARD Hrnnaun, of Cadiz, invented a new and useful improvement in Washing full, clear, and exact description of' the sa1ne,'ret`eren ,t specification. in which- Figure l is a Werspective view, anu
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section.
The saine letters al'e employed in both figures for the indication of identical parts.
My inventitm consists in so arranging a washing machine that the clothes shall be placed between an adjustable grated surface, and held in'contact with a'revolving cylinder having corrugated rubbing-surfaces by the tension et' elastic lwebbing, and in so constructing the revolving cylinder that the wash water shall be carried over with its revolution and discharged upon the clothes being washed.
rfhe following description wil in the county ot' Henry, and State of Indiana, have Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a' ce being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this l enable one shillcd in the art to constructand operate my improved machine. A is the box for containing the wash lwater, resting upon legs I3. Within the box is an adjustable rubbingboard, C, so hinged to the machine that it may have sufficient oscillation to accommodate the clothes placed between it andthe revolving cylinderE. y rlhe compression of the adjustable rubbing-board C against the clothes is maintained/by the constriction-ot` the elastic `webbing D attached thereto, and carried over the cap A which covers the cylinder. It is formed by two sidepieces, connected by bars rounded on the side next the cylinder, to avoid tearing the clothes. The cylinder is hung upon a shaft resting onthe box A, and turned by a winch, F, by hand, or with a treadle. In the latter case a ily-wheel must be also hung on the shaft. It is constructed with a series of buckets, El, somewhat `like those of an over-shot water-wheel, by which, as the cylinder revolves, the wash water is raised over the cylinder andl discharged upon -the clothes te be washed. The spaces between the buckets E2 are corrugated, as shown. By the rapid revolution of the cylinder a stream of water is constantly poured upon the clothes subjected to the action ofthe corrugated surfaces E2 and the adjustable grated wash-board C. I What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is 1. In combination with a revolving rubbing-cylinder, E, the adjustable wash-board C, and bands of elastic webbing D, arranged to `operate substantially as lset forth.
2. The revolving cylinder E, when constructed with buckets El, and rubbing-surfaces E2, substantially as set forth. u
In testimony whereofI havesigned my name to this specification in the presence'of two subscribing witnesses.
RICHARD HUBBARD.
