'ro ALL WnoM 1T MAY coNcEnN,
Be it known that I, ELI HUNT, of Shelburn, in the county of Sullivan, and State of Indiana, have invented u new and improved Clothes-Washing Machine; and I do hereby decla-rc that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the-same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the l'etters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to a new and improved clothes-washing machine, of that class which is provided with u. rotary clothes-receptacle. The invention consists in placing a rotary clothes-receptacle having a periphery n composed of slats and provided 'internally with lifters, the elothesreceptacle being placed within a suitable suds-box, aud all arranged in such a manner that the clothes, as the receptacle is rotated, will'be passed through the suds, raised or lifted out therefrom, and allowed to drop from the top of the receptacle into the suds, to be again passed throughit, which operation eectuallycleanses the clothes. In the accompanying'sheet of drawings-a' Figure l is a transverse vertical section of my invention, taken in the line :v' x, fig. 2.
Figure 2, a front elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents a ends-box, which is of cylindrical form, and supported at a suitable' height by any proper framing, B. This suds-box is provided with a hinged section, a, which serves as a lid or cover, and within thc Buds-box there is placed a' cylindrical rotating clothes-receptacle, C, the shaft b of which has its bearings in the ends ofthe ends-box. The clothes-receptacle is composed of two circular heads, c c, and a periphery ofrounds or slats, d, which admit of the'suds entering it. It is also provided with a hinged section, e, to serve as a door to admit of clothes b eing placed in and taken from it. (See iig.- 1.) Within the clothes-receptacle, to the inner sides of the rounds or slats, there are attached projections, f, which may be termed lifters, as they catch under the clothes and raise them out of the suds as the receptacle C rotates, the clothes dropping from them as they reach a position directly over the shaft of the receptacle. Any number of these lifters maybe used, but three, placed on three rounds which are equidistant from each other, will probably be suicient.
The suds-box is supplied with a requisite quantity of suds, the clothes to` be washed or cleansed placed 'within the receptacle C, and the latter rotated by means of a crank, y, on one end rof the shaft b. 'lhe clothes lby the rotation of C are passed through the suds, raised upward and out from it by the liftersf, and drop therefrom into the suds as the lifters reach a point directly over shaft b. 'Ihe clothes, in consequence of being subjected to this operation, are effectually cleansed, and without being injured in the least.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An im roved clothes-Washin machine, consistin of the o en c lindrical clothes-rech tacle C, ro'vided. P g g P y P P Withtho lifters f and rods d, fitted within the cylindrical suds-bcx A, the hinged doors in the hinged top of the suds-box, and cylinder, all constructed, arranged, and combined to operate as described and specified.
'. Ihe above specification of my invention signed by me, this 9th day of September, 1867.
ELI HUNT.
