Description

(Bifida www? @eey LEvr'HERMANcE, or HUDSON, NEW YoRK.
Letters Patent N0..`85,821, dated January 12, 1869.
IMIPIROVIElD` WASHING-MACHINE.
*40h-* The Schedule referred to in these Lett-ers Patent and making p'art of the same.
To all whom it may concern v Be it known that I, Lnvr HERMANCE, of Hudson, in the county of Columbia, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wash-Boilers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, referen'cebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of'. reference marked thereon.
f The nature of my invention consists in the application, to a common wash-boiler, of an openrevolving cylinder, attached to a movable frame, and in the manner of operating the same, all of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
. In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and oper- -ation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation in section, Figure 2, an end view, and Figure 3, a perspective of the-movable frame. A represents a wash-boiler, made in any of the known and usual ways.
On the bottom of said boiler is placed a movable frame, B, the end-pieces of which are high enough to allow the cylinder O to be pivoted on the same, and still be a suitable distance from the bottom of the boiler. The cylinder Gis constructed of two polygonal heads, a a, connected by .means of ribs or slats, b b, nailed or otherwise secured to the sides of the heads, but so arranged as to leave a space between the slats,as shown in fig. 1.
The heads a a are each made in two pieces, hinged together so that the cylinder can be opened and the articles to be washed placed inside of the same, when it is again closed.
On the outside of one of the heads a, isplaced a cir- \cular plate, al, and the heads of the cylinder are in their centre provided with journals, which pass through the end-pieces of the movable frame B, allowing the cylin. der to revolve freely.
The boilerA is provided with a lid, D, which has a slot just above the circular plate d.
Onv each side of this slot is a standard, c, between which is placed a wheel, E, s aidwheel projecting down through the slot in the lid, and touches the circular plate d.
The shaft i, on which the wheel E is placed, is provided with a crank, F, by means of which the machine is operated.`
The wheel E and plate [l may, around their peripheries, be provided :with rubber', so that the cylinder O will be turned by the friction alone, or they may be provided with cogs, ii' so desired..
The object of' having the crank F in the position herein indicated, is that it will be further away from 'The dilculty experienced in washing clothes byl steam and hot water, whereby the action ofthe steam and-water acts only onvone portionof the clothing, is, by these means, obviated.
Having thus fully .described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is 1. In combination with a common wash-boiler, the
open revolving cylinder G and movable frame B, when constructed and arranged to operate substantially as shown and described.
2. The arrangement of the slotted lid D, and its wheel E, with the wash-boiler A, lslotted cylinder O, and movable frame B, all substantially as shown and described. t
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 6th, day of lNovember, 1868.
