Description

drilled tatr i @sind @Mira IMPROVE!) WASHING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it mwy concern Be itknown that I, J oHN D. VAN DUsEN, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga, and State of New York, have invented' certain new and useful Improvements in 'WashingMachines and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact 'description .thereof,.reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a longitudinal section,
Figure 2, a plan view, and
Figure 3, an end View ofthe washer and wringer of my washing-machine. Y
Similar letters indicate like parts in all the figures.
My invention relates. to improvements in washingmachines; and to this end,
It consists in the employment of a frame, provided with pivoted roll'ers, between which the clothes to be washed are passed, by means of a wheel attached to the end of one of the rollers.
It further consists in providing the said frame with screens and a sliding platform, t which are attached heads or plungers, so that the water can be passed through the clothes, causing both force and suction.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing- A represents an ordinary box, made with a projection at its bottom, as seen at a. l
B represents a wooden frame, 'which is provided at each side with a parallel opening or slot, b, the object of which will be hereinafter shown.
O represents an opening at the bottom of the frame B, which extends the whole Width of the said frame, and is provided, on its inner edges or ends, with screens, d d
'Ihe upper part. of frame B is formed with two projections, e e.
In these proJections is pivoted the roller D, provided at one end with the wheel E, said wheel being formed with holes, a' a' a', near its circumference.
D is a roller, formed with journals at each end, and working into the slots, b' b', made in the projections.
e c are springs, one end of which is attached to frame B, and the'other end pressing against the roller D', so as to keep the two rollers the proper distance apart.
F represents a slide, working inthe opening or slot b, as seen in fig. 3.
On this slide, opposite the screens d d, vand outside of them, are attached the head-pieces or plungers g g.
On each side of the slide, outside the frame B, are secured the wooden projections ff, iig. 1.
To these projections is pivoted one end of the pitmen h h, the other end being attachedl to theshaft H, said shaft being provided with thel crank G.
The operation of my machine is as follows:
The suds are first placed inthe box A, until the rollers are about one-third covered. The articles to be Washed are started between the rollers, by means of the wheel E, and, while the clothes are passing down through the rollers, into the space or opening C,
between the two screens d d, the 'suds are forced through the clothes, by means of the heads or plungers g g.
While one head is pressing the water or suds, the clothes are drivenagainst the opposite screen, nearly closing it to the rush of the water, and, as both heads move in the same direction, it causes both a vacuum and a suction in the space or opening O.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The frame B, formed with recess or chamber C, the ends of said chamber being provi'ded with screens or perforated plates, in combination with plungers g g, operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A washing-machine, consisting of frame B, slide F, plungers g g, screens d d, rollers D D', wheel pitmen h h, and crank G, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially in the manner and for th purpose set forth. Y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN D. VAN DUSEN.
Witnesses:
HORACE T. 000K, WILLIAM Grimm.
