Y Be it known that L'HIRAM W. WHITE, 'of Olney, in the county of Richland, and State of Illinois, have invonted'ta new and useful improvement'in Washing Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the` saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made part of this specification. v

This invention consists in s'o constructing and arranging the mechanism of a. washing machine as to adapt it to be readily used in an ordinary Wasl1-tub, InA the drawings- Figure 1 is a plan view.

Figure 2 is a. vertical vsection on the line ma", fig. 1. i

A' represents a wash-tub constructed in the usual Way, and on its interior provided with staples or sockets a for the reception -of the hooks b. on the sides of the frame B, which isperforatedto form bearings for the Ashafts C of the rolls D. The upper bearings are made oblong, as shown at b', to allow the rolls to accommodate themselves tothe clothes which are passed between them, and the upper shaft is elongated, and provided with a crank, E, by which to rotate them, the bottoms of the bearings of the upper shaft being at av sufficient height to support the shaft above the upper edge of the tub. Those parts of the battons B, above the bearings of the uppenshaft, are made tubular for the o'ds F to pas-s through. Those rodsvare preferably made of wood or soft metal, so that in bearing upon the'shaftthcy will Wear the same as little as possible, and are provided with pinsfin their upper ends, which pass through oblong 'slots g in the ends of the spring G, whose centre is also provided with a'liole for the passage of the pressure-screw H, which has itsbcaring in the cross-'batteri B" of the frame'B,.land is manipulated'by'the crankI, their joint forming the bearing shoulder. The rolls D may be either smooth or corrugated, and be'made of any suitable material, and any desired number of them used.y

' The operation is `as follows: The frame being in position, and the tub filled to a proper height with water,

the clothes are properly soaped and passed back and forth between vthe rolls until entirely clean, the pressure being regulated by the screw in vthe top of the frame to suit the size of the clothes being Washed.

Having thus described-my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The roller Washing machine B C D E, provided with attaching devices to secure it within a common Wash-tub, substantially as described.

2. In connection with the above, Ifurther claim the pressure device F-'G- J, in combination with the' rolls D and frame B B', as and for the purpose specified.
