Description

.eine
A gaat PHENDEUS H. LEWIS, oF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 85,943, dated Janna/ry 19, 1869.
mROvED WASHNGMAGEINE.
The Schedule referred to In these Letters Patent making partof the same.
To all 'whom t concern Be it known that 1, PHENDEUS H. Lnwls', of Boston, in the county of' Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing, forming a part'of this specification.
This improvement consists in a new anangement and adjustment of parts in a washing-machine, by which it is made se adjusting, and more serviceable and easily cleaned. In the drawingsv Figure 1 is a longitudinal section ofthe machine.
A is the drum. It is made of heads, into which are 1 framed alternately'slats a, of a trapezoid section, the
short side out, and in the intervals of these slats,
' other slats, b, of an angular section, filling the intervals, and presenting their angle outward.
This is hung'in the centre of a loose-jointed frame, B, pivoted to the wash-tub O, at its end, and extending around thev same.
A tongue, c, extends downward from this frame, and is pierced with holes to receive a spring-lever, d, below to the tub, -at oneend, having a fulcrum, h, in the centre of the bottom of the tu The wash-tub O is a square or rectangular box, with legs at its corners.v At its cornersin the interior are ledgese, and Within it is placed theconcave wash-board D.
'This is a wooden frame fastened to two slats j, which rest on the ledges e, and have a slight spring or yielding motion.
Buttons gare, put on the ends of' these slats-to raise the frame in4 the" tub, and obtain a greater or less pressure upon the material to be washed.
Between the sides of the frame of the wash-board are placed rollers h', freely revolving.
The operation of this machine is as follows:
. The tub is filled with water, wash-boardD is placed in position, and the buttons on slats f arranged so as to suit the thickness of clothing to 'be washed. The frame B is brought over so that drum A rests m the centre ofthe wash-board, and the spring-lever d brought up against the fulcrum h, and fastened through the tongue c. The clothes to be washed are then fed in from one or 'the other side, and the drum receives a rotary motion to bring them between the drum-slats and the wash-board, and a' reciprocatingrotary motion to give them the necessary scrubbing. These two motions accommodate themselves to the lwork by means of the spring-slats of the wash-board and the arrangement of the frame in which the drum is hung.
What I claim as my invention, and-desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of drum A, frame B C, sprlnglevcr d, and fulcrum 71, with reference to tub C, when the wash-hoard D is arranged within itv by means of spri11'g-le\ers j' and ledges e, all substantially as described. y
