Letters Patent No. 8295535, dated October 27, 1868.
nvrpnovnn WASHING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same,
To all whom it ma/y concern:
vBe it known that I, E. F. ONEILL, of Prairie du Chien, county of Crawford, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby dec-lare that the following'is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whichr will enable others skilled inthe art to makev and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication.
.Figure 1 is a top view of my improved washingmachine.
vFigure 2 '1s-a vertical cross-section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. y i
My' invention has for its object to furnish animproved washing-machine, simple in construction, easily operated, and veffective in operation, doing its work quickly and well, and in such a manner as not to injure the clothes or break the buttons; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts, as hereinafter more fully described.
AI is thetub, the sides of which are slotted from the upper edge, to receive 'the journals of the cylinder B.
. In the bottom of the slots a are placedsmall coiled or other springs, M, upon which the journals rest, so that the said cylinder may give, to adjust itself to the varying thickness of the clothes being operated upon. To the projecting end of one of the journals of the cylinder B is attached the v crank C, by which the cylinder is operated.
D is a bow-lever, the ends of which are curved or bent downward, and have eyes formed in them, to hook upon the hooks F, attached to the tub A, pivoting the lever to the tub, so that the said lever may give or move upon its pivoting-points, to accommodate the machine to the varying thickness of the clothes passing through it. y
H are three or more small rollers, the faces of which are grooved longitudinally, andthe central one of which is pivoted to the bow-lever D,'in-'sucha position as to be directly over ,the cylinder' B."
The side rollers H are pivoted' to arms G, which are `slightly curved, and the middle part of -which is pivoted to the pivots of the central roller H, so that the three rollers may be arranged in -a slightly-curved position, to correspond with the curve ofthe cylinder B,
J is a downwardly-projecting apron or flange, ati tached to the board I and bow-lever D, to prevent the Water from spatterin g out of the machine, when pressed out of the clothes, bythe action of -the rollers H and cylinder B.
L is a loop, made oi' galvanized wire, so that it may not corrode or color the clothes, the ends of which are pivoted to the ends of the roller B, audwhich passes along longitudinal grooves in the face of said'cylinder, so that, as the cylinder revolves, the loop L, and the clothes passed through it, will drop away from the face of the cylinder B, and swing in the water, the clothes being thus swept loosely through the water.
In using themachine, one corner of the garments to be washed is passed under the wire loop L. The bow-lever D and its corrugated rollers H are.. then turned down into the position shown in iigs. l. and 2, and pressed down with one hand, while the other revolves the roller or cylinder B, by means of the crank C.
By revolving the roller B in one direction, one side of the clothes will be rubbed, and, by turning it the other direction, their other side` will be rubbed, the
operator being able, at all times, to see the clothes,
and thus know when they are clean. Where dirty spots are seen upon any part-of the clothes, by moving the crank .C back' and forth a few times, that part of the clothes may be rubbed until clean.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as' new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the bow-lever D, board I, apron or ange J, arms or bars G, and three or more corrugated rollers H, with each other, and with the tub- A and cylinder B, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
. E. F. ONEILL. Witnesses:
