Description

Letters Patent .-No. 96,154, dated 0ctoberf`26, 1869.`
IMPROVED. WASHING-MACHINE.
The Schedulereferred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, R. H. SIPEs, of Bloody Run,
' in the county of Bedford, and in the State of Penn- Sylvania, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Gum Clothes-Washing Machines; and do `hereby declare that the following description, taken 'are made use of, and consists in the combination and arrangement of the parts thereof, as hereinafter de-l scribed.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, which illustrate my invention, and form apart of the specilication thereof- Figure 1` is a perspective view, and
Figure 2, a vertical transverse section.
In both of the iigures, corresponding parts are represented by similar letters.
The construction, operation, and relative arrangement of the component parts of my invention are as follows, to wit:
'lhe wooden prism A is enveloped by theperipherical gum covering B, iuted with longitudinal furrows, and is operated by the crank c, attached to the shaft D.
The said shaft has its bearings in the bottom of elongated qnadrilateral apertures or vertical slits E, cut in the cheeks or side-pieces F.
i About the ends ofthe said shaft is the ring G, supporting the pendent hook H, which engages with another hook at the end ofthe rod I.
The other end of the said rod is coiled to form a spiral spring about the knobs or spindles K at the ends of the cross-bar L.
The rubber bar M is fiuted with longitudinal furrowsnpon its upper side, and covered with zinc. The said bar is secured in posi-tion by means of slots prepared for the reception of the ends thereof in the cheeks or side-pieces F.'
On each side of the said bar are the small rollers N, the oiiice of which is merely conductors for the clothing to bewashed. v
Attached to the bottom of the frameare the hooks o with sharpened' points, and the elbow-screw and thumb-nut P, working in the quadrangular slot It.
The operation of my invention is as follows, to wit:
The machine having been fastened to the tub, by means of the hooks o and screw P, rotary motion is imparted to the tinted roller B, by means of the crank c, causing the ribs of the same to engage with-the zinclflut-ed to serve as covered ribs of the cross or rubber bar M. The clothing to be cleansed having been passed over the rollers N,is seized by the gum roller B, and pressed against the bar M, the action of the said appliances being similar to that of the hand upon a'common washboard. The spiral spring upon the spindle K, connected, as aforesaid, with the journal of the said roller B, allows the same to ascend, as may be requisite, in order to permit the clothes to pass under it, but causes a constant pressure to be exercised upon them.
When not in use, the rod I may be disengaged from the hook H, thereby preventing the said spring from becoming weakened by tension.
Having thus described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I will proceed to designate what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, in the following clause:
I claim fiuted roller-crank c, small rollers N,`spring K, pendent hook H, cheeks F, hooks o, slits E, and screw P, when combined and arrangedas described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 16th day of September, 1869.
' R. H. SIPES. WVitnesses:
JOHN' A. GUMP,
W. H. WHIsEL.
