UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
DANIEL T. WARD, OF IRVING, KANS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO J. M. CLARK.
COMBINED WASHING ANDwRlNGlNG MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,720, dated June 7, 1881.
Application filed March 12, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL T. WARD, of Irving, in the county of Marshall, and in the State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Washer and Wringer; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention has for its objects to provide a combined washing and wringing machine which may be applied to any ordinary tub,and by means of which the clothes may be thoroughly washed and then wrung, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the apparatus and devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- s Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improvedapparatus complete Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section; vFig. 3, a detached perspective view of the lower portion of the apparatus, showing the device for fastening the same in a tub; and Fig. 4 a detached "iew, showingthe crank and the washin g-roller bearings.
The letter A indicatesthe main frame of the apparatus, and B the base upon which it is mounted.
The letter 0 indicates two removable side pieces, which are slotted at their lower ends, as indicated by the letters 0, the slots setting over the shaft of the main roller L, so as to confine it to its bearings when in place. The said side pieces are held in place by means of the pins 61 projecting into recesses e in the lower side of a movable cross-bar, E, said cross-bar having projections at each end setting in the grooves e of the main frame.
The letter D indicates a similar cross-bar, having projections at its ends setting in said grooves e, and E two rubber or other springs confined between said cross-bars.
The letter B indicates a binding-screw hearing against the upper cross-piece, D, so as to bring a spring-pressure upon the side pieces.
The letter H indicates a removable frame, secured between the side pieces above mentioned by means of the pins h h. The said frame carries the rollers J J and K, the roller K being covered with canvas or other similar (Model.)
woven material. The rollers J J are grooved, as shown, and the roller K is provided with a ridge on its periphery, which engages said groove.
The letter M indicates a series of three rollers journaled together under the main roller L. The shaft of the central roller of the rollers M is journaled in bearin gs B, Fig. 4, and the others are jonrnaled in bearings M secured to the said shaft. The shaft of the main roller L is journaled in the bearings 1?. These bearings are preferably made of galvanized iron. The main roller is covered with canvas, over which is secured a final wrapping or netting of cords having large meshes, so as to form a roughened surface that will carry the clothes between it and the other rollers, and also rotate said rollers.
The letter S indicates a disk provided with a crown-ratchet, the said disk being secured to one of the projecting ends of the shaft of the main roller L. The said shaft at the same end is provided with a loose winch, T, which is adapted to be shifted so as to set or take into the ratchets on the disk at any convenient point, for the purpose more fully hereinafter specified.
The letter N indicates a bar provided with a lip, n, and 0' a similar bar provided with a series of teeth, 0, with which the lip on the bar N is adapted to engage. The said bar Ov is provided with a strap, p,through which the bar. N passes, the two making an adjustable compound bar which extends through a slot, 8, in-the base of the apparatus.
The operation of my apparatus is as follows: The base is set in an ordinary tub and the compound bar so adjusted as to bear firmly against its sides, forming a support for the apparatus at three points-one end of the base and the ends of the compound bar. As thus secured it is evident that no 'rockin g or working loose of the apparatus can take place.
The lower rollers, with the main roller, which are immersed in the tub, form the washing portion of the machine, and the rollers in the loose frame, which set above the tub, the wringer. The loose crank and crown-ratchet serve to permit the main roller to be operated without necessitating the entire rotation of the crank.
By loosening the set-screw at the top of the machine it will be seen that the parts may be all readily removed from the main frame, when required, for cleaning or other purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In combination with the main roller having a surface of canvas and a final wrapping of cords, the lower rollers, adapted to operate in conjunction with the main roller to wash the clothes, substantially as specified.
2. I11 combination with the removable side pieces and the main and lower rollers, the removable frame carrying the wringing-rollers and the movable cross-pieces and springs and set-screw, all arranged substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. In combination with the base of the apparatus having the aperture 8 formed in the side thereof, the compound extensible bar fitting within the same, consist-ingot the serrated 20 piece 0 enga gin g-piece N, and strap p, Whereby the apparatus is secured to the tub, substantially as described. t
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of 25 February, 1881.
