ro ALL WHOM rr MAY OONOERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM EBERHARD, of Akron, in the -county of Summit, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machine and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of-my improved washing-machine.
Figure 2 is a cross-section, taken in the line x fr, 5g. 1.
Figure 3 is a cross-section, taken in the line yy, iig. l.
Figure 4 is a partial u ndcr side view.
ASimilar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
l This invention relates to an improved' washing-machine, and consists in a device for attaching to an ordinary washngtub, which device consists of two corrugated rollers, one of which has a slow rotary motion, and the other a reciprocating motion, between which rollers the clothes pass and are rubbed to discharge the dirt and cleanse them thoroughly, as hereinafter particularly described.
A represents a strong wooden frame, as long as necessary to extend across a wash-tub, to be fastened on the upper edge by a'set-screw, a, on the end, as shown in iig. 1. Y.A corrugated roller, B, made of wood or any suitable hard substance, runs lengthwise on the upper side of the frame A, set upon a shaft, b c, made of gaspipe or an iron rod, on one end of 'which shaft is a pinion, c, that takes motion from a worm, d, on a crankshaft, e.- Over the roller B is placed another corrugated roller, C, covered with rubber or hard' cord, which roller is hung between two vibrating frames, g g, at its ends, one of which frames is connected by a pitman, 7L, with a crank-shaft, c, geared to the crankshaft e, and so arranged that the roller C has a reciprocating movcment over the roller B, while it rotates by turning the crank m on the shaft el? The vibrating frames g g are connected by a rod, n, that is attached at one end to a-hand-lcvcr, p, and so arranged.V that by the action of the lever the upper roller C may be lifted easily from the lower roller B, to introduce one end of the clothes to b'e washed. 'Ihe framesvarc so pivoted that the upper roller can rise or fall easily, according tc`the bulk of clothing passing between the two rollers. Guards q q are placed on each sido of the lower roller B. l
The operation is as follorve:n The clothes being in the tub with suds, as usual, one part is placed between the rollers B C, when, by turning thecrankm, the lower roller A will turn and carry the clothes over with it, while the upper'roller, C, will reciprocatevarrd produce a rubbing motion, whereby the clothes will be cleansed by the combined action of thewtwo rollers, in a manner similar to rubbing with the hands, and with triiiing manual exertion.l
IIaving described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The washing-machine constructed as described, and consistingl of the rollers B C, frame A, shaft 6,'
vibrating frances g g, pitman L,crank-shaft k, shaft c, crank m, worxnd, pinion o, ily and gear-wheels, lcverj), und rod n, all arranged and operating as described, and for the purpose spcciied.
2. In combination with the vibrating frames g and roller C, I olaim-thelever pand rod n, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.l l
3. In combination with roller B, I claim the guards g, substantially as .sct forth. Y
` WILLIAM nenni-IARD. Witnesses:
