TO 4ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that we, JOHN F. Ricos and WILLIAM M. ALBIN, of Saint Joseph, in the county of Buchanan, and State o' Missouri, have invented a new and improved Clothes-Tashing Machine; and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification ot' the same, wherein we have set forth the nature and principles of our said improvements by which our invention may be distinguished from all others of' a similar class, together with such parts as we claim, and desire to have secured to us by Letters Patent.

This invention relates to a new and improved clothes-washing `machine of that class which is provided with a reciprocatingplunger to compress the clothes in the suds-box, and by its action turn the clothes therein while compressing them, so that theyl will all be acted upon alike, and all thoroughly cleansed.

The invention consists in the novel means employed for operating the plunger, and in the arrangement of certain detail parts, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby a very ellioient clothes-washing machine is obtained. In the accompanying sheet ot' drawings- Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section oi' our invention.

A represents the suds-box of the machine, which stands on four legs, a a a a', the former, a, which are at one end oi' the machine, being each composed of two parts, connected by a hinge, Z1, the hinges being applied in such a manner as to admit of the lower parts of the legs being turned outward when desired, and the two parts being kept rigid, when necessary, by a slide-latch, c, shown more particularly in fig. 3. B is a wheel, the shaft d.' of which has its bearings in the upper parts oli the legs a. This shaft d has a crank, e, upon i-t, fromwhich motion is given an oscillating frame, C, by means oi' a connecting-rod, D, the outer part of the latter being round, and passing loosely through a rod,f, in the lower part of the frame C, the ends of the rods having round journals, which are allowed to turn in the side pieces of the frame, the' rod D having a pin, g, passing through it, at the outer side ofthe rodf, and a spiral spring, E', fitted on the round part of D, between the rodf and a shoulder, h, thereon. (See figs. 1 and 2.) Within the suds-box A there is an inclined plunger, E, having two arms F attached, which pass through the upper part of one end of the suds-box, and ,have a series of notches, @'madc in their under sides to catch over a rod, j, in frame C. The end-k of the suds-box oppositeto or facing the inclined plunger E'is inclined, and rounded at its lower part, as shown clearly in iig. 1, and tothe sides of the suds-box near the end 7c there are fitted handles F, so applied thatfthey may be readily removed when necessary.

The suds-box is supplied with a requisite quantity ot' suds, the lower parts of the legs a turned down oir adjusted in a vertical position and secured by the latches c, and power applied to the shaft d, the wheel B serving as a. balance-wheel. A reciprocating motion is imparted to the plunger Efrom the shaft ul through the medium of the crank, connecting-rod, and oscillating frame, and the clothes are subjected to the necessary pressure and motion within the suds-box to thoroughly cleanse them, theclothes being turned overvas well as squeezed and compressed by the action of the inclined plunger in conncctiouwith the inclined end 'Ihe plunger E may be made to work nearer `to or further from the inclined end c oi' the suds-hox by adjusting different notches t' on the rod j in frame C. In moving the device from place to place the lower parts of the legs a are turned upward, which allows the wheel B to rest upon the ground, as shown in tig. 2, and the handles F being applied, the device may be shoved along like a wheel-barrow. When the machine is in use the handles F are removed so as to be out of the way.

Having thusV described our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Paten t- 1. Operating the plunger E through the medium ofthe pivoted frame G, connectingrod D, and crank c of the shaft d, substantially in the manner as and for the purpose set forth.
