Lena-sv Pfam No. 95,239, daad samba 28, 1869.
rMPRovED WASHING-Maca; Nn.
The Schedule referred to these Letters Patent and making part of the s ange.
Be a known that I, GEORGE A. tmc-asf sp1-ingeId, in the county of Sangamon, and inthe State of y Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Washing-Machine; and. do hereby declare that thefollowing is avfull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,
Inakingra part of this specification, in whichf Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved device, and f n i Figure 2 side elevation of the same. t Lettersrof like name and kind refer to like parts in V.each f' the ligurels.
"My inventionrelates to`a class of devices, termed washing-machines,l having' for their object the cleansing of clothes; augd It consists in thfe peculiar construction and arrangement of theseveral parts, by means of which the de- .sired object is accomplished with less labor, and in a more thorough manner than is possible bythe use of machines :Ofbrdinaliv construction.
"In the annexed drawingm A represents the box lor reservoir `of the Washer,
` "havingvertical sides, while `the ends are shaped, as shown in iig. 1, and provided with a cover, B, hinged -at oneend to one of said end-pieces.
Placed .at a distance of from one to twoinches from thefbottoin of the box is aser-een, C, formed of strips jof'wire, arranged .parallel with each other, and secured attheirends to cross-hars, c c, the object of which is tal shafac, and at its upperendfto a pitmau, F.
The outer endof said pitman is pivoted upon a crank,` G,"secured to and form-ing alpart of a`sl1aft,H,
`-which isjournalled within suitable bearings upon the projecting ends of the hoxfand operated by means of a crank, I, upon its outer end.` v
' y *K represents a second or upper rubber, corresponding in size with the lower one hereinbefore described, one endof which is suspended from the cover by means of a chain, L, while the opposite end is suspended from a rod, N, pivoted to said rubber, and to the front end of the pitrnan E. l
As thus arranged, it will be readily seen, that it' the shaft H is caused to rotate, the crank G, operating through the pitrnan F, lever E, and rod N, will impart to the rubbers a reciprocating motion, in opposite directions, so that if suds were supplied to the box, any article of clothing placed-between said rubbers would he rapidly cleansed. Y
In order that greater pressure may beY exerted upon the clothes, two spiral springs, M, are secured at one end `to the lower side of the cover, and at the opposite end, to a harm, placedhori'zontallyand lengthwise of the hoxA.l The length of the .springs is such as to cause the cross-hars to heary lightly upon the upper rubber when it is resting upon the lower one, and as the clothes placed between said rubbers vary in thickness, the pressure will correspondingly change.
. The weight of the upper rubber, in addition to that of the lid, makes it necessary that some provision-be made for Vraising Vsaid cover,.and securing it in position.
Ths'object is attained by means of a lever, O, pivoted near its centre to the side of the box, and at its upper end to a rod, P, which is, in turn, pivoted at its opposite end to said cover, so that by depressing the outer end of said lever, the' cover is correspondingly 4raised. A catch upon the inner side of said lever,
near its handle, engages with a toothed rack, R, se-
cured to one end of the box, and holds` said lever in any position desired. y 4
`1Iaving thus fully set forth the nature and merits of `my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The within-described washing-machine, consisting of `the hox A, the cover B, the screen C, the rubbers D and K, operated by means of the lever E, pitman F, crankv G, shaft H, and rodN, the chain L, the
springs M and M, and the levers O and P, all con-
