Description
r .dorneys J CHN MAKECHNEY, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-WRINGERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,495, dated February 6, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHr MAKEGHNEY, of Trenton, in the county of Mercer and in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes lVringers; and do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact. description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specilication.
rIhe nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a clotheswrin ger frame;7 as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention apperta-ins to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my entire clothes-wringer, one of the end pieces of the frame being in vertical section. Fig. 2 is an inside view of one of the end pieces; and Fig. .5 is a perspective view of the sliding` block placed over the journal of the upper roller.
A A represent the end pieces ot' my wringerframe, connected at their lower ends by a concave, B, and at their upper ends by a crossbar, U. These end pieces are slotted vertically to a suitable depth, and in said slots are placed the journals ofthe lower roller D, acrank, E, being attached to one of said journals for the purpose of operating the machine. The upper roller D is placed upon the lower roller D, its journals also enteringthe slots in the end pieces A A. On top of these journals, in said slots, are placed blocks G, having iianges c c, projecting on the inside of the end pieces to keep them from slipping through. From the upper side ofthe block G extends a rod or pin, H, with a head, b, at its upper end, said head forming a rest or support for a rubber or other spring, I, which is compressed by a set-screw, J, to any as shown in Fig. 2, and form a box, in which a rack-bar, K, slides bach and forth, the movement of' said rack-bar being caused by alever, L, pivoted to the side piece, and provided at its lower end with cogs gearing in said rack-bar. 0n the side ofthe lever L is a toothed projection, which catches in a segmental ratchet, d, attached to or forming part of the end piece. To the under side ofthe end piece is attached a foot, l), and to the end of the rack-bar, projecting through a slot in the bottom ofthe end piece, is a similar foot, l, this latter foot being moved to or from the stationary foot by means of the lever and rack-bar mentioned. By these means the wringer may be readily attached to the tub, and to prevent bruising the edges of the same, the feet l P"are covered with rubber or other elastic substance c, as shown.
Having thus fully described mylinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of the cogged lever L, ratchet-segment d, rack-bar K with toot P', and the stationary foot I), said feet being provided with elastic covering e, all snbstan tially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the frame A B (l, rollers D D', blocks G G with anges a a, headed rods H H, springs l I, set-screws J J, lever L, segment d, rack-bar K, and feet P P with elastic covering E E, all constructed and operating substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day ot' December, 1871.
JOHN MAKEGHNEY.
