To all whom 'it mel/y coment Be it known that I, G, A. DABNEY, of San J os, in the county of Santa Clara, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing- Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following -is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled inthe artto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw-V ings, foirning part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal Vsection of my improved washing-machine.

My invention has for its object to furnish a'n improved machine for washing clothes, which shall be simple in construction, and 'effective in operation, doing its work rapidly and thoroughly; and it consists in the construction and combination of various parts ofthe machine, as herehlafter more fully described. p

A is the box or tub of the machine, which is made rectangular in its general for1i1,with vertical sides and sloping-ends, as shown infig. 1, the end at which the operatorstands being made higher than the other end, and the lupper edges of the sides, are curved downward, fom the level of the `higher end to the level of the lower end, as shown in fig. I.

` The legs G, at the end of the tub farthest-from the operator, are extended up above the upper edge of the tub to a suiicient height to support the swinging bars D, the upper ends of which are pivoted to the upper ends of the legs G by a rounder rod, E, passing through the said upper ends of the said legs and the said upper ends of the said swinging bars To 'the lower ends of the swinging bars D are pivoted the rear ends of the side bars or levers F, towhich the rubber=block G is pivoted. l The forward ends of the side bars F are connected and held in their proper relative position by the rod or round H, which also formsa handle for operating One of the grooved sides of the rubber G may be covered with zinc or rubber, if desired, and in the grooves of the other side are secured bristles or other suitable fibrous material, the bunches of which are placed about half an'inch apart, and eut oii evenly about half an inch above the surface of said side.

I are two cross-bars connecting the side' bars F, and which. are placed, one at each edge of the rubber G.

J is a hook, one end of which is pivoted to one of the bars I, and which hooks into a stapleattached to the other bar I, so as to lie along the upper side of the rubber G, holding it Securely in position, and preventing Iit from revolving while being used, and, by unhooking which, the rubber may be ad] usted, so that either side may be used as required. l

K is a removable frame, placed in the bottom of the box or tub A, and to which is pivoted a series of rollers, L, the ends of which are pivoted to the frame K, and which should be arranged in-a curve, corresponding with tlie movement of the rubber G.

If desired, the rollers L, or each alternate roller, may bereplaced with grooved or brush-blocks, and in this case the rubber G should be made in the form of a series of rollers, but I prefer the construction first described, as operating more satisfactorily.

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-e The reversible rubber G, constructed as described, in combination with the side bars F, swing-bars D, and removable rubbing-platform K L, substantially as herein shown and described, and for Athe purpose set forth.
