Description

tctrd gisten ROBERT WILSON, OF BURDETT, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 93,263, dated August 3, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN' WASHING-MACHINES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom. it may concerne Be it known that I, ROBERT WILSON, of Burdett, in the county of Schuyler, and in the State of New York, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Washing-lilachines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which is shown a vertical longitudinal section of my improved device.
The nature of my invention consists in the general construction and arrangement of the machine, and in the employment ofa roller-shaft, secured to the front legs, by means of which said machine can be readily' moved about a housev with the expenditure of but littlc force.
In the annexed drawing- A A represent the legs secured to and supporting the box or trough of the machine, consisting of two perpendicular side-pieces B, and of two end-pieces C and D, both of which slopeA downward to the bottom lil, at angles of from thirty to forty-five degrees with a perpendicular line'.
-One of the end-pieces, C, is provided with. a series of grooves, c c, Sac., extending laterally across the same,
while the opposite end D has a plain surface.
Secured to, and extending upward from each sidepiece B, at or near its centre, lengthwise, is a standard, F, which is connected with that upon the opposite side by inea-ns of a cross-bar, G, onev end of which is iitted into a vertical mortise in the upper end of eachstandard, the whole serving as a support for a swin ging rubber or pounder, H, consisting of two strips 7i, each of which is pivoted, at its upper end, to a standard, and connected, at its lower end, to a horizontal board, I, extending downward nearly to the bottom E.
lIhe lower end of the board I, upon the side next to the corrugated or grooved end O, is extended forward, and its upper surface is grooved, as shown in the drawing.
A handle, K, is attached' to the front side of the rubber, and projects forward and upward, so as to be within'convenient'reachof the operators hand, and furnishes arneans by which said rubber may be swung back and forth upon its pivots.
The operation of this machine will be readily understood.
A sufficient quantity of suds is supplied to the trough, and the clothes to be cleansed placed therein in front of the rubber, which, being then swung back and forth, alternately compresses said clot-hes against the grooved board O, and releases them, producing a rotary motion', by means of which every part is subjected to the action ofthe rubber, and the whole thoroughly cleansed.
' As the machine is diicult to move from one part of a room or house to another, more especially when containing water and clothes, a roller, L, is secured upon a shaft, M, which shaft is pivoted within suitable bearings, projecting ibi-ward from the front legs, so that when the machine is resting upon all its legs, the roller will not bear upon the floor, but, when the rear end of said machine israised by means of lzan lles N, secured to each side, said roller shall receive and support the entire weight of themachine, which, may then be pushed alongthe loor with perfect ease.
'Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits 0f my invention,
What I claim as new, and Adesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Ihe within-described washing-machine, consisting of the box BB, C, D, and E, standards F F, cross? bar G, rubber II, and handle I, in combination with the roller L and shaft M, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this'l'l'th day of VJune, 1869.
ROBERT WILSON.
