Description
'rarns turn IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l0,266, dated October l1, 1870.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, B. ILLINGwoRTi-I, of Freeport, in the county of Stephenson, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vashing Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in a double corrugated india-rubber cylinder for washing clothes, placed above another similar cylinder, which will most eifectually rub and clean them.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 an end View.
A represents a tub or boX, of suitable material and dimensions, which box rests on legs B B.
In the center of each side of the tub or boX A is a standard, O, in the lower part of which a roller, D, has its journalbearings. This roller is made of wood or iron and covered with an india-rubber cylinder, E, which is formed with teeth a a. of suitable size, and the whole surface of this toothed cylinder is again provided with smaller teeth i t', extending the full length ofthe same, thus forming a double series of corrugations around the entire sur face of the cylinder. Above this cylinder is a similar roller and cylinder placed, its corrugations meshing into the corrugations on the former. The latter roller has its j ournal-bearings in blocks I, placed above the journals in slots on the standards O C, said' blocks being held down by springs b b, surrounding the pins c c, which extend from the upper side of the blocks I I through the top of the standards C O. Thus the upper cylinder is allowed to give suicient to let the clothes pass through. A crank, F, is attached to the upper roller, by which the machine is turned.
I am fully aware that rubber cylinders for squeezing and wringing clothes are not new; hence I do not claim them. Nor do I claim the adjustability of two cylinders by springs or other devices when one is placed above the other.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the two cylinders E E with the tub A, when said cylinders are corrugated as described-that is to say, are composed of india-rubber, with teeth a a and 11 z', and secured upon polygonalshaped rollers D, and adjustable within the center of the washtub, to operate as specified.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of August, 1868.
BENJAMIN ILLINGVORTH.
