Description

BRANSON vBREEDEN, OF LEXINGTON, VIRGINIA.
Letters Patent No. 90,490, dated May 25, 1869.
IMPRO'VED WASHING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, BRANsoN Bananen, of Lexington,` in the county of Rockbridge, and State of Vir.- ginia, have invented a new and improved Wfashing- Machine; and I dov hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andv exactdescription of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through linexx of out.
In this invention a set of vertical beaters is employed, operated by a rotary shaft, and combined with a revolving tub, an apparatus for raising all the beaters at once, and a heater for keeping the water at any desired temperature during the operation.
In the drawings- H represents the heater or furnace.
A, a circular metallic tub, resting upon the upper surface of the heater, and having a cog-rim, a, around it,- which, gearing with a cog-wheel, B, enables the operator to rotate the tub about its vertical axis, by means of a crank and shaft, C C'.
D Dl D", 85o., are a set of beaters, attached to vertical sliding rods d df d2, weighted, as seen at W Wl W2, &c.
Each of the rods has a projecting arm, e, on its rear side. y
rlhe crank-shaft C supports a horizontal drum or roller, C2, provided with a setof pegs, c c, which,
coming in contact with the arms 'e e, raise the beaters and drop them one after anotherA as the cylinder is rotated.
At the same time that the cylinder thus performs Figure 2 is a front view, a portion of it being broken this function, it rotates thetub A, and causes the beaters to operate upon all the clothes therein uniformly, thereby thoroughly cleansing them.
The beaters maybe attached to a box, F, which can be fastened down tothe frame of the apparatus by a hasp, h.
Above the box F the rods :l d, 85o., pass through a horizontal plate, G, which can be raisedor lowered by a lever, L, so as to raise or depress all the rods and beaters at once, thereby throwing them into or out of connection withthe operating-cylinder.
The whole device is simple, easy of operation, and exceedingly eicient, thoroughly cleansing the clothes, and removing stains, grease, Snc., from them-without tearing or injuring them, as is necessarily done where they are scrubbed over a corrugated board, either by` hand or otherwise.
I do not claim any specific part of this machine as vmy invention, when considered independently of the otherparts; but having thus described my invention, What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The washing-machine herein described, consisting essentiallyof the furnace H, rotary-tub A, cog-rim a,
gear B, crank and shaft C G pegged or toothed cylinder C, beaters D, provided at their upper ends with Weights W Wx W, the plate G, and levervL, all constructed and arranged in themanner and for 4the purpose specified.
vThe above specification of my invention signed by me, this 22d day of February, 1869.
BRANSON BREEDEN.
