Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W.- SAYRE,
OF PISGAI'I, OHIO.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SAYRE, of Pisgali, Butler county, Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination of a series of corrugated beaters, hollow or otherwise, which are suspended and actuated through the means of cranks and pitmen, all of which are connected to a pivoted frame, the latter being provided with an adjustable weight, so as to be capable of eflicient operation within a box or tub, which is provided with a scroll bottom, all of which will be herein more fully described.
Figure I represents a side elevation of my machine with one side of vthe box broken away. Fig. 1I represents a' top or plan view ot' my machine with the hinged cover opened.
In the drawings, A denotes the box or tub; B, the scroll-bottom; O, the wash-board; D, the partition which serves as a screen and protector; E, the hinged cover; F F, the crank-wheels. H represents the pendants; I, the beaters; J, the pitmen; K, the pivoted frame; L, the adjustable weight; M, the spring-stop.
By reference to the drawings, it will be observed that the pivot or shaft by which the oscillating frame is suspended is provided with pulleys P P, by which the machine may be operated, any suitable or convenient power being used.
The oscillating frame K to which the cranks, pitmen, beaters, and pendants are attached, is suspended from two uprights fastened to the sides of the box, as seen in the drawings.
The thumb-screw R serves to secure the adjustable weight in any desired position, it being necessary to throw it in front over the wash-board when light and delicate fabrics are being washed, and when heavier or coarser goods are being washed the weight may be adjusted at the rear of the frame or at any intermediate point.
Having now fully described the construction and arrangement of my improved machine, I will now proceed to describeits mode of operation.
The suds being preparedthe attendant will elevate the rear end of the adjustable oscillating frame so that it will catch and be held by the spring-stop M. This will carry back the beaters, so as to permit the clothes to be placed in the box in front of them. The hinged cover being then closed, the spring-stop will be retracted so as to permit the frame to descend, thrusting the beaters forward again. The machine being now ready for operation, one or two persons may cause the crank-shaft to revolve, which will give alternate reciprocating motion to the beaters, which will cause' the clothes to be constantly agitated and pressed by a positive thrusting motion, which is found most efficient for removing the dirt, without subjecting the clothes to friction and its consequent wear. During this part of the operation the scroll-bottom of the box, near its front, will cause the clothes to be continually revolving, so as to bring all parts in contact with the action of the beaters.
The use of my adjustable Weight enable smy machine to be used for light and delicate fabrics as well as heavy clothes or carpets, and in washing the latter a much briefer period of time will be required, because of the additional positive or percussive action which' the weight adds to the action of the beaters. It will also be noticed that the normal weight of the frame and force of the beaters will be diminished when delicate fabrics are being washed by removing and securing the weight in front, so as to partly counterbalance the weight of the frame and its connections.
When the washing is completed in the rst suds, the frame is again elevated and held by the spring-stop, the hinged cover opened, and the attendant can take out the clothes, examining for any unremoved stains, which may be washed upon the board C.
Having fully described my improvements iu washingmaohines, what I claim, and del In testimony whereof I have hereunto subsire to secure by Letters Patent, isscribed my name this 19th day of November,
