Description
N UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
C. O. LUCE, OF BRANDON, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, F. M. STRONG, AND I. F.
ESTABROOK, OF SAME PLACE.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,836, dated May 14, 1861.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, C. O. LUCE, of Brandon7 in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved VashingNIachine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a4 part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.
Similar letters of reference in both views indicate corresponding parts.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to de` scribe its construction and operation with reference to the drawing.
The tub A is provided with a toothed ring B which is firmly attached to its bottom and which rests on friction rollers a..
These rollers have their bearings in smallv standards b, that are secured to the frame C as clearly shown in the drawings. The cover D of the tub is Secured to the crossbar c of the frame at such a distance above the tub, that it covers the same perfectly without obstructing its rotary motion and a portion of the cover is hinged so that it can frame C. The sha-ft E carries a series of pinions z' which gear into toothed racks y', that are secured to the top ends of the'stems Zi of the pounders or beaters F. The stems 7c are guided by notches cut into the cross bar c and top bar h of the frame C and the pounders are placed on one side of the tub for the purpose of facilitating the han- (lling of the clothes. As the tub rotates the clothes are brought successively under the pounders. The pinions i which impart motion to the pounders, have a portion of their teeth cut away to give the pounders time to descend and they are so arranged on the driving shaft E that they act alternately or one after the other on. thev stems 17a, and the motion of these stems is facilitated by friction rollers Z that are secured to the upper' surface of the top bar 7L. The poundersF may be kept up by dogs m that are hinged to the front side of the top bar h, whenever it is desired to clean the tub and to put in or take out the clothes.
The operation of this machine is very easy. It can be cleaned without dificulty and allV its parts are so constructedv that they do not easily get out of order.
Having thus fully described my invention,V what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent ism 'Ihe arrangement of the racks j, pinions l z', shaft E, and rollers Z with vthe stems 71;, pounders F, rotary tub A, shaft lD and gearing f, g, e, e, B, all as herein shown and described for the purposes set forth.
c. o. LUCE.
