Description
@ITE STATES" PATENT OFFICE.
V. R. STEWART, OF WEEDSPORT, NEW YORK.
WASHING-MACHIN E.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,199, dated June 24, 1856.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, V. R. STEWART, of Veedsport, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, said drawing being a vertical longitudinal section of my improvement.
My invention consists in the employment or use of a corrugated cylinder and reciprocating corrugated board, arranged and operating as will be presently shown and described.'
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a rectangular box, on the upper part of which, a cylinder B, is placed transversely, said cylinder having its periphery corrugated or uted longitudinally.
C, represents the driving shaft of the Inachine which is placed at one end of the box A. This shaft has a crank at one end and a toothed wheel E, at the opposite end. The wheel E gears into a pinion F, which is placed on the end of a shaft Gr, said shaft having its bearings on an upright plate or board H, attac-hed to the box A. The shaft C, has a pulley I, upon it adjoining the wheel E, said pulley having a band or rope J, passing around it, the band or rope also passing around a pulley on t-he end of the shaft of the cylinder B.
The inner end of the shaft G, has a crank K attached to it and a pitman L is attached to said crank, the lower end of the pitman being connected to a curved board M. The face side of the board M, is of concave form of which are attached to the upper part of the plate or board H. The plate -or board I-I, is slotted in order to allow the crank K and pitman L, to work therein.
The operation is as follows: The box A is supplied with a requisite amount of water so that the cylinder B will be sufiiciently immersed therein, and a proper amount of soap is dissolved in the water. The crank of the driving shaft C, being turned, the cylinder B, will be rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow and the board M will be moved up and down and pressed against the clothes, shown in red, by the springs N, N. The clothes being subjected to the necessary friction and rubbing between the board M, and cylinder B. The clothes, if they consist of long pieces, may be wrapped around the cylinder B. If short pieces are to be washed, they may be in most cases merely placed between the board and cylinder.
The above machine is extremely simple and efficient, thoroughly cleaning the clothes, without injuring them by excessive or undue pressure.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
The combination of the corrugated or iiuted cylinder B, and reciprocating board M, arranged as herein shown and described, for the purpose specified.
V. R. STEWART.
