IMPROVEMENT IN WASHlNG-MACHlNESr Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,825, dated August 26, 1879; application filed July-3, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN P. MI'iLLER, of Burlington, in the 'county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a perspective View. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the drive-wheel, and the eccentric by which the pump is operated.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

This invention relates to washing'machines; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafterfully described, and particularlypointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, A represents the box of the washing-machine, which may be made of any suitable material; preferably rectangular in shape, and supported upon legs B B. Between the sides of the box, near its rear end, is journaled -a shaft, 0, carrying segmental plates D D, between which is secured a curved plate, E, forming a support for a series of rollers, F F, made of or covered with rubber, or similar material, and journaled between the plates D D, which extend beyond plate E, so as to form flanges for this purpose.

Suitably attached to the shaft 0 and plate E is an arm, G, which extends through a slot, H, in the rear end of the box, its end being connected by a'pitman, I, with a crank, J, upon a shaft, K, journaled upon suitable bearings in the rear legs or supports of the machine. Shaft K carries a fly-wheel, L, and at its end, a band-wheel or pulley, M, connected by a belt, N, with a band-wheel, O, journaled upon a stud, P, upon the side of box A. Secured to the side of band-wheel O is a small eccentric, Q, connected to and operating the plunger, R, of a small pump, S, ar-

ranged in box A between its side and plate D, the spout T of which terminates directly over the rollers F F. The wheel 0 is provided with a handle, U, by which it may be operated.

V represents a curved corrugated plate, fitted over the rollers F F, and provided with rearwardly-extending arms W W, by which it is hinged between the sides of box A. Plate V has a laterally-projecting stud, X, against which bears the upper end of a lever, Y, pivoted upon the side of the box,'and the lower end of which may be worked, by the foot of the operator, in such a manner as to press the corrugated plate V against the rollers F F.

The rear end of the bottom of the box is curved upwardly, as represented at Z.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation of my invention will be readily understood. The corrugated board V is raised so as to enable the clothes, well soaped, to be placed upon the rollers F F; the board V is then returned and pressed, in the manner described, toward the rollers. By operating the machine the set of rollers is reciprocated, thus thoroughly rubbing the clothes, over which water, at the same time, is thrown in a continuous stream by the pump S.

After being washed, the clothes are placed upon an inclined table, arranged above the rollers F F, to which the water draining 0E is thus conducted.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, in a washing-machine, of the reciprocating rubbing-rollers F F, hinged corrugated plate V, having stud X, lever Y, and pump S, all arranged and operating sub stantially as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
