WASHING-MACHINE.
$PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,031, dated June 30, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED T. J AOKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hickory Grove, in the county of Graves and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVashing Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object ofthis improvementis a cheaply constructed, easily operated, and efficient washing-machine. This result is attained by the mechanism illustrated in the drawings, herewith filed as part hereof, in which the same letters of reference denote the same parts in the different views.

D is a metal plate secured to the cover-sec tion 0 by bolts (1, and having an'elevation, D, and an arm or extension, D. The elevation D of the plate D with the extension D forms a way or guide for the reception of a rackbar, F. The latter is provided with a slotted eye, f, connecting with a pitman, G, which has a slotted eye, g, between which is pivoted the operating-handle end H- of the lever H". The said lever is arranged vertically with the tub, and has its lower end pivoted to a slotted plate, H, which is secured to the bottom of the tub by any suitable means.

E is a shaft secured in position through corresponding opening in the cover-section G and arm D of the plate D D.
E is a pinion rigidly secured to the shaft E, and meshes with the rack-bar F.
J is a disk secured-by any suitable means to the lower end'of the shaft E, and provided with a series of perpendicular extensions or pins, K, for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
The tub A is to be lined with zinc or other sheet metal,in order to make the same watertight, or the same result may be obtained by any sufficient construction or means.
Reciprocal motion given to the handle H will operate the disk J through the rack-bar F and pinion E, and the pins K will engage with the garments in the tub and give them such motion through and friction against the suds and each other as will thoroughly cleanse them without injuring their texture.
'It will be observed that the peculiar construction of the plate D with the elevated part D and the perforated arm or extension D enables said plate to serve both as a guide or housing for the rack-bar and also as a bearing for the pinion-shaft E.
Having explained the construction and operation of my improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a washing-machine, the combination,
with the tub suitably supported and provided with a top or cover, of the vertical shaft E, journaled therein, depending into the tub and carrying an agitator within the same, the plate or casting D, secured to the cover and formed withthe raised portion or elevation D, and the perforated arm or extension D, the latter providing a bearing for the upper end of the V shaft E, a pinion, E', fitted thereon, the rackbar F, working in the ways formed by the elevated art D, and en a in the pinion E,

2. In a washing-machine, the combination, with the tub suitably supported and having a cover made in sections, of the plate or casting D, fitted to one of the coversections and formed with a raised part or elevation, D, and an extension or arm, D, the shaft'E, carrying the agitator within the tub and provided with a pinion, E, at its upper end, a rack-bar, F, moving in the ways formed by the elevation D and engaging with the pinion E, a pitman, G, connecting withthe rackbar, a plate, H, secured to the bottom of the tub, a lever, H fulcruined in the plate and connected to the pitman, and an operatinghandle, H, for the lever, as and for the purpose set forth.
