Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAHAM SHULTZ AND DANIEL SHULTZ, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, ABRAHAM SHULTZ and DANIEL SHULTZ, of the city of Reading, county of Berks, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lfVashing-l/Iachines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which the figure is a perspective view thereof.
The nature of our invention consists in having a vertical concentric oscillating tub A which has its bearings in cross brace B at the top and a pivot and step on the bottom which is secured to framework C.
D D, are cleats secured in a vertical position on the inner side of tub A. E is a hexagonal rubber also having a concentric oscillating motion and operates in conjunction with tub A and is furnished with spiral cleats O, O, on the periphery and is placed in the center of tub A.
F is a sha-ft to which the hexagonal rubber is secured and has bearings in the framework C at the top and works in a step in the bottom of tub A.
G is a vertical crank shaftwhich has bearings in step I-I and frame C, to the upper end of which the bevel pinion I is secured.
J is a hand crank shaft having bearings in framework C and has a bevel wheel K secured thereto which works into the pinion I and is furnished with a crank L by which means power is applied to the machine.
M M are connecting rods attached to the crank on shaft Gr and to the projecting cleats N and P on the tub A and hexagonal rubber E by which means a concentric oscillating 26,790, dated January 10, 1860.
motion is imparted to both the cylinder and the tub continually in opposite directions toward each other.
The utility and superior advantages derived in our invention is by means of a double concentric oscillating motion of the tub A and the hollow hexagonal rubber E with the spiral cleats upon the periphery thereof which in operating the machine have a tendency to elevate and depress the cloths up and down in the water in conjunction with the concentric oscillating motion and at the same time the hexagon corners of the rubber presses the cloths against the cleats in the tub and the square spaces between the corners allow the cloths to expand which by the agitation of the water in and through the hexagonal rubber and the action of the machine the cloths are washed completely clean.
Te do not claim the shape of the tub nor do we claim the vertical cleats on the inner side or passing the cloths between a cylinder and tub as those devices have long been in use; but
lVhat we do claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The hexagonal rubber E with the spiral cleats O, O on the periphery as set forth in combination with the cross brace B and connecting rods M M attached to one crank or eccentric for imparting a double concentric oscillating motion to the tub A and hexagonal rubber E when constructed, arranged and combined as and for the purpose herein described and set forth.
