Description

PATENT OFFICE.
NOYES PALMITER, OF SCOTT, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 67,575, dated August 6, 1867.
I0 all nfhom it may concern:
Beit known that I, NOYES PALMITER, of SCOTT. in the county of Cortland, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ashing Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making apart of this specification.
In the annexed drawings, A represents an oblong box, having suitable feet, upon which it is supported. The bottom of this box is provided with three or more slots, z z z, running along the entire length, upon which are placed crosswise a series of ribs, a` a. These ribs, bein g placed at short intervals apart, allow the water to pass between and under them and cause the clothing to be thoroughly soaked.
E E represent two standards placed at each side of the box, having a cross-bar, h, at the top, from which is suspended the wash-board. The under part of the wash-board is also provided with slats and ribs a a', in a manner similar to the bottom of the box, and is connected to suitable arms B B, which are suspended from the cross-bar h. The top parts of the arms B have long tenons, which pass into the openings made therefor in the bar h, and are rounded at the bottom to correspond with the rounded tops of the connecting-boards c c.
VIt will be seen that the tops of these boards c are so cut, and the bottoms of the arms B likewise, as to form a neat joint when they are connected by the cross-piecef.
Upon one end of the box Ais a short shaft,
S, having suitable bearings, and a crank, l, at the outer extremity. Upon the inner end of this shaft is a faced cogwheel, F, which meshes into a small beveled cog` m, having a crank, P, Figure 1, connected to its under side, and to which is passed a pitman, g, to the cross-piece f of the wash-board b, whereby the said board is propelled back and forth over the ribs in the box A.
By means of the long tenons d at the upper part of the arms B the board is made to suit the quantity of clothing placed within the box, and the joint at f allows the board to be propelled in horizontal manner. rI he board can be thrown upward from the box and out of the way by uncatching the pitman and throwing` the arms up by the tenons on the upper bar, 71,.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement of the box A, with its slots z z and ribs a ay a, when used in combination with the board b with slots and ribs a', in the manner and for the purposes specified.
2. The arms B B, constructed as described, and connected to the wash-board, when operated by means of the shaft S, wheels F m, crank p, and pitman g, when combined and used for the purposes set forth.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of April, 1867.
NOYES PALMITEB.
