TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Be it known that I, Mrs. ADELIA WALRON, of Sant-a Clara. county, State of California, have made a new and useful improvement in a Washing Machine for cleansing clothes or other iibreus substances. Y
Figure l is a. wooden box, four feet long, two feet and three and a half inches deep, eighteen inches wide at the top, and six inches at the bottom. The slope of the end-pieces, from eighteen inches at the top to six inches at the betteln, is all on the front side, the back part being perpendicular. The washer is made to stand securely by the box, and two legs, A A, attached to the ends ofthe box, diverging to make a firm and steady machine.
Figure 2 is a fixed Wash-board, O, on the inside of the sloping front, and occupying its whole surface.
Figure 3 is a'mnvahle wash-board, K, parallel with fig. 2, and of corresponding size. It is furnished with grooves similarto .therfront board, and is for the purpose of operating upon the clothes to'be washed, the same as the front board, and is kept to its place by two eccentric-buttons, fastened to the ends of the box, and
marked B-B.
Figure 4 is the sash 'that holds the clothes. It is furnished with wooden pegs to secure the clothes from being drawn from theframe while in process of cleaning, and which are marked d cl d. There is a sliding adjust-l able box in this frame C, that can be kept in its place by a pin or catch, to operate as a clamp to secure firmly the pieces to be manipulated between the tivo washboards as the frame moves up and down, thus producing the same effect as the knuckles and fingers. The sash is furnished at the top with a. movable head-piece, D, that operates on bearings in the side-picces of the frame F F, thus givmg to the sash full play to be operated between the wash-boards in the machine. In the middle of the head-piece D is fastened a lever, G, which has its fulcrum, H, in an upright slotted piece, fastened to the back of the box, and has attached to the lever G and the fulcrum-shaft India-rubber or metallic spring J, or a Weight can be attached, if necessary, to assist in the operation of moving the clothes-frame and 'contents in the operation of washing, thus dispensing with the labor of raising the frame by'hand, requiring only the downward pressure of the lever to operate the machine. There is a space behind the movable washaboard K for the dirty clothes to be placed in the suds, to become thoroughly saturated with suds while one batch is being'manipulated. The box is furnished with a front-piece, L, that slopes towards the box, so that in varianging or removing the clothes from the frame, no slopping need come upon the person or the oor. There is'also a lid, M, that covers the box while it is in operation or after it has been used. The .lid M has a space cut out of the two front corners of thesides to make a space for the sashframe N, and also for the attachment of the wringer to the box. The wash-boards, sash-frame, lever, and springs can be applied to any stationary tubs inside, when they use hotwatcr and cold water, in wash-houses, or in private families.
What I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is- The double wash-boards O and K, the eccentric-buttons B, the sash-frame N, with clamp O, the lover-handle G, the spring J, in combination and exactly as set forth, and for the purposes specified.
' ADELIA WALDRON.
