Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE PRINDLE, OF SPAFFORD, NEW YORK.
I MPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,865, dated August 16, 1864.'
T0 aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE PRINDLE, of the town of Spadoni, in the count-y of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement on Washing- Machines; and Ido hereby declare th at the following-is a iull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the sam'e, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 'l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a sectional view.
My aim is to furnish a 'Washing machine which shall be simplein its construction, easily worked, not liable to get out of repair, and which can be furnished at a small expense.
To enable others to make and use my in vention, I will proceed tol describe its construction aud operation.
My washingbox A may be made of any convenient size, and placed upon suitable legs, (represented in Fig. 1 by the letters a a.)
The slanting end of my box 13,1 make with corrugations b b, which can be used as a washboard. A 1
In the lower portion of my washing-boxI place the rollers c c, which have spindles or bearings, which spindles revolve in proper holes in said box and constitute a semlclrcle.
The rubber D, I make of semicircular form, corrugated upon its convex side, which corrugations come in contact with the rollers during the operating ofthe machine. The rubber is provided with handles H H, and two stand ards, R R, fastened to the center of the rubber, which pass through a roller E at the top of the washing box and revolve with the rubber. The standards R R, passing through slots in the roller E, readily adjust the rubber D in its upward and downward movements without that resistance which would obtain were the roller E placed in guides or grooves. The resistance to the rubber in its action upon the clothes to be washed is, by reason ofthe revolving roller E and standards R R, always in a perpendicular position to the slots in the roller.
What I claim as my invention is- The construction of a washing-machine provided with the adjustable rubber D, when combined with the standards R R, roller E, provided with slots to receive said standards, and the corrugated end B, in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
l HORACE PRINDLE.
