Be.it known that I, JOsPnD. DAENPORT, North Providence, in the county of lProaddestrare', and State t of Rhode Ieland,,havjc invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes-Horses; and I do hereby declare that the' following specification, taken' in connectionl ivith 'the drawings making a. part of` the saine, is e full, clear, and 'exact'description thereof.

My improvement consists in so combining a number` of suitable frames, upon which clothes can be hung, with o common central spindle or foot-stand, that suchframcs, when the clothes-horse is in use,- r'adiatin'g from such central stand, can be. clamped together, and in consequence the clothes-horse can be more conveniently` moved, when lled with clothes, along' the oorfrom place to place, without risk ofupsetting."

In the drawing, showing my improved' clothes-horse in perspective,it-will be seen that A A representa l convenient number'of side-rails suitable for a clothes-horse, each of which is furnished with a convenient number y l of horizontal slats or bars,-B,' for holding articles, which may behung over them. All of these partial frames so constructed are hinged to a common central 'spindle or shaft, C, which pass-es throu'ghhholes or eyes `provid-ed in the ends of the slats. Obviously 4the axesof these holes or eyes should coincide, and, asthe several hori-` rental bars'or slats B are, at their point of connection with' th'e central. spindle, placed one above another, they should also be arran ged in the frames to irhich they belong, with euch variations of height from th'e floor respecb ively as will accommodate this necessity. l v

In order to clump these several radial bars B together, I prefer to surround the central shaft with sections of pipe D' furnished with hanches d, which sections of pipe, forming long collars, ll'the spaces in the length of thesp'indle betwcen'the sets of bars, and also a similar section occupies the space between the foot of the spindle and the under side of the first har, or, instead of such collar at this place, a nut maybe used. The

upper end of the. spindle is provided with a screw-thread, and in4 connection with it is a. thumb-nut, E. It is quite apparent that, upon turningthe nut E, the several bars can be clamped, sb that thevrhole apparatus, when the radial framesrot which it is made up are spread apart, can be moved without', danger of, the frames folding upon each other.

It is not absolutely necessary, though preferable, to so construct the c`lothes-horse that the pressurcof the thumb-nut shall, by means of the long. collars D, be communicated to cach of-tbe sets of slats inthe series. A washer, held up against the lower slat of the uppermost set by a pin passing through the spindle, would rnish a stationary surface, between which and the thumb-nut the uppermost set of slatsuould be clamped; and thercl'v the advantage of my improvement would be obtained, though in a less substantial form.
