Description

MANNING, OFDANVILLE, ILLINOIS- Letters .Patent No. 85,836, dated January 12, 1869.
IMPRQVED EXTEN SION -TABLR The Schedule referred to :in these Letten Patent and making put o! the Ilmo.
To all whom tft may concern:
Be it known that I, G. S. MANmG, of Danville, in the county of Vermillion, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extension- Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is :1 full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to `in ake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciication.-
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in extension-tables, whereby the table is rendered much more convenient and useful than extension-tables of ordinary construction; and
The invention consists in so forming the table that the parts may be separated, and a number of separate tables formed thereof, as will be hereinafter morel fully described.
Figure l represents a longitudinal View of the under side of the table, when the same is extended, (0r with the parts all together,) showing the position ofthe legs', andthe manner in which the half rounds and leaves of the table are supported.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same through the line x x.
Figure 3 represents one of the half rounds detached (showing the under side) as when ,nsedas a side-table.
Figure 4 is a sectional longitudinal view of one of the l supporting-slats provided with a spring-catch, the section being through the line y y of iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. .A represents the central portion of the table, which is supported by four legs, and which (with the falling leaves B and G, which are hinged thereto,)'form of themselves an ordinary diuing-tab1e,the leaves B C being supported by the pivot-slats d and e, as is co1n mou in such tables.
F and Gr represent two semicircular tables, which, when the table is extended, 'are attached to each end, as represented in the drawing.
The table may be arranged for one or more extension-pieces, H.
i, j, k, and. l, represent supporting-slats, the inner ends of whichenter slots fin', n, c, and p, in the rails q lr of the central table, as seen inthe drawing, iig. 1, after being passed through slots s t in the half rounds,
as seen in G, or through metallic clips fav, as seen in F. l
These supporting-slats are provided with springcatches, fw, which catch inside the slots and clips, which prevent their being withdrawn unless the springs are compressed.
x represent hooks, and
y represent staples for' fastening the half rounds F and G to the leaves B and C of the table, and also for fastening the two half rounds F and G together, so as to make a circular or round table, and also for attaching one of the half rounds to the narrow shelf z, so that the same may be used as a side-table, as seen in lig. 3.
The half rounds are also provided with dowcl-pins for en ten g holes in the leaves or 'extension-pieces, and
vin each other, in the usual manner.
Itl will thus be seen that, by this arrangement, four dierent tables maybe formed, namely, an ordinary double-leaf dining-table, a long extension-table, a round table, and a side-table, each perfect in itself, and useful and convenient for all the purposes for which such tables are employed.
As seen in the drawing, both of the half rounds are provided with two legs for their support, which, in ad. dition tothe slats and hooks and dowel-pins, render them substantial in all their connections and combinations.
I- claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 4 l 1. The extension-table, formed by the combination of the half rounds F G, containing the slots s tor clips u c, the detachable bars '5,j, k," l, and spring-catches W, with the square central table A, when the half rounds are provided each with two supportinglegs and adapted to be secured together to form a round table, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the spring-catches W with the detachable slats i, j, k, l, the half` rounds F G, and the bars q fu of the central table A, as herein described, 'for the purpose specied.
G. S. MANNIN G. Witnesses: l GEO. G. MANNING, J oHN N. MANNLNG.
