Description
i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTHONI ISKE, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVED EXTENSION-TABLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 46,240, dated February '7, 1865.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANTHONI ISKE, of Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extension-Tables; and I do hereby declare that the followingis afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part ot' this speciiication, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the table extended; Fig. 2, the central foot or support, showing the slotted cross B C 5 Fig. 3, the top of the table closed up or united by their base.
The nature of my improvement consists in the construction of an ornamental center-table, which admits of being extended so as to answer for a dining-table, having a irm central support. When so extended, I employ crossslats in the same manner as in the patent I obtained. bearing date April 5, 1859, diiierently arranged, without the double Wings, 86e. lo enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will prcceed to describe its construction and operation.
Fig. l shows the cross-slats and the two segments of the table drawn apart to be filled ywith boards adapted for the purpose between them resting on said cross-slats. A The central support, Fig. 2, shows the cross-pieces B C firmly affixed on the column or foot A. These cross-pieces B C are slotted, as shown, d d. The ends c c entering into a groove, F, in the cross-pieces E, under each segment, when united by their base, as shown in Fig. 3. The cross-slats are centrally secured by a iixed pivot at their combined terminus, under each segment, and also by a central pivot (marked l in Fig. l) to the center of the cross-pieces B C on the support A. These cross-slats thus secured to the parts mentioned by pivots are Iattached to eachother by a series of pivots, admitting them (the cross-slats) to be drawn apart or closed together under the segments or top of the table. The pivots ot' the crossslats (marked 2 3) extend through the slots in d in B, respectively, being held by a screw and bur beneath. The pivots marked 4 5 operate in like manner through the slots din the cross piece C. These several pivots, 2 3 and 4 5, are thus held and move or slide back and forth in the several slots d on the stationary cross-pieces B C, while the central pivot l, is affixed to the central column or support.
The operation is so simple that a glance at the drawings will explain the nature of this invention.
This arrangement admits of the construction of highly-ornamented center-tables, so as to convert them readily into dining-tables, equally ornamental, when the intermediate leaves are laid on. The central ornamental column gives the whole a hrm support, and allows the boards being spread bountifully without any danger of yielding to the pressure. Altogether I nd it a decided improvement over my former arrangement applied to square tables, and while the means otl extension are `the, same, I do not claim the cross-slats lixeii on each side of a central partition in the tabletrame, nor hinged wings, as such are embraced in my patent referred t-o.
What I claim as my invention or improve ment, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The central column or support, A, with its cross-pieces B G and slots d, in combination with the cross-slats s and their sliding pivots 2, 3, 4, and 5, in said slots, d d d d, arranged and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
ANTHONI ISKE.
