Lettere Patent Ne. 72,635, dated Deeemeee 24, 1867.
IMPROVED SOCKET POR RBVOLVING GHAIRS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: y
Be itknown-that I,MLEVI HEYWOOD, of Gardner, in the county of Worcester, andState 'of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Revolving'or Swivelling Chairs, of which the followingA is u full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying dra-wings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1' isa/perspective view vof my improvements, representing five legs of a chair connected together.
Figure 2 is a. horizontal section, and l Figure 3 a vertical section, representing the manner of securing the legs to, the socket-plate of a revolvf ing chair. t i
Figure 4'is a. perspective view of the socket-plate detached.
My invention relates-to that class of chairs in which the sent revolves, und consists in an improved socket for receiving the upper ends of the legs, and holding them morestrongly together thun heretofore.
To enable others VYskilled in the art to understand and use my invention,1 will proceed to describe the mnnner in which have carried it out.
In the said drawings is represented tive legs, A, of n swivelling chair, the additional legA being provided to aerd greater security from being overturned. B is a metal socket, of' the form shown, provided with'a screwthread, a, for the reception of the screw upon the metal plate attached to the'bottom of tli'e sent o f a chair, by
which construction it may be revolved when desired, the screw turning within'the socket, and serving as thc 'the lower end of the Socket being provided with an equal number of similar-shaped projections, c, each of which K centre uponwhich the seat is pivoted. On the outside of the upper end of the socket are formed five projections, b, the under side of each of which is hollowed out, i'or the reception of the upper end of a chair-leg, A,
is slotted outto allow a. leg'lto pass through. A screw, d, passes from the outside of each projection, e, into the leg within its slot, to prevent any play therein, thereby insuring'greater strength.
The socket B may be provided with either-more or less projections, 6, than here shown and described, for use in chairs with four or other number of legs, and the socket may he of any other form desired, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
C'Zam. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The within-described socket B, for receiving the upper ends ofthe legs of chairs, substantialiy as set forth.
LEVI HEYWooD.
