Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-DRIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,639, dated July 4, 1871.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DON CARLOS SMART, of Cambridgeport, in the county of Middlesex and State oli'llassaclnisetts, have invented a nenT and useful Improvement having reference to Rotary Clothes-Driers; and do hereby declare the saine to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of Which- Figure l denotes a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a vertical and longitudinal section of my invention as applied to the foot or pedestal of a clothesdrier.
My invention relates to that class of clothesdri ers which has its frame supported upon a vertical spindle or journal, on which it may be rotated, as circumstances may require. My inven tion consists in an improved combined spindle and cap, to be affixed to the top of a pedestal for supporting the frame of a rotary clothes-drying apparatus, the said spindle being doubly supported, and the said cap performing the double function of aiding in maintaining the spindle in its normal position and protecting the top of the pedestal from Wear and atmospheric influences.
In the said drawing, A denotes a short metallic cylindrical. rod, the upper part of which constitutes a spindle or journal, a., While its lower end forms a shank, b, which is to be inserted in a socket, o, formed axially in the head of the Wooden pedestal B. From the base d of the said journal a hollow conie frustunl or shield, C, projects down and lits upon the topof the pedestal, which is formed of a corresponding shape, the saine constituting both a support for the j ournal and a cap or shield to the pedestal. Through the said frustuni, and extending up from the head ofthe pedestal, three or any ther suitable number of rods, e, are disposed, which receive nuts f on their upper ends, by which the cap and spindle are irmly secured to the pedestal.
Having described my invention, what I claim is as follows:
The improved combined spindle and pedestalcap for clothes-driers, as composed ofthe journal a. and its prolonged arm or shank b, the frustoconic support and cap C, the screw-rods e, and nuts j', or their equivalent, the whole being formed and applied, or to be applied, to the pedestal D, in manner and for the purpose set forth.
DON CARLOS SMART.
