Description
tl-PETERS, PHOTO-LFKHOGHAPHER. wAsHINGTON. D. l;

LettersPatent No. 113,548. dated April 11, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING ATABLE-TOPS.
VThe Schedule reiened to ln these Letters Patent and making part of the sanne.
To whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES W. MILLs,'of Ghicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding .Table-Tops; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon and being a part of this specification.
Figure ,1 is a plan view from the under side, showing the extension-leaves open Figure 2 is the same with the leaves closed; and Figure 3 is an end elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
This invention has for its object the construction of a folding table-top, more particularly designed to be used on sewing-machine tables.
The invention consists in a top pieceftoone side and one end of which are hinged proper leaves; and in a corner leaf hinged to the -end of the end leaf.
These leaves are so 4connected by certain toggle- `ioints that the raising or lowering of theend leaf will also operate the others, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
A representsv the main portion of the top, mounted upon proper legs B.
To one side of this top'A is hinged a leaf, C, and to one end a leaf, D, to the end of the. latter there being hinged a corner leaf, E.
F is a strut securely fastened to the under side of the top A.
. Pivoted to the'lower end of this strut is a system of toggle-joints G.
H is a rod, secured at one end to the center joint -of the toggle G, andat its other end to the underside ofthe leaf D.
I is a'strut, attached to the under side of the top A, to the lower end of which is pivoted a double hinge,
J, the other end being, in turn, properly pivoted to the under side ofthe leaf D. This hinge is provided with an overlap upon one side in order that it may not open beyond its center.
K is a system of toggle-joints, properly hinged at -one end to the corner leaf E, while the other end is pivoted to a strut, L, which is securely attached to the leaf D.
Extending from the central joint of K is a chain,
M, the other end of which is secured to the leg of the stand.
When itis desired to raise these leaves so as to give. an enlfrged sulface to the table-top, take hold of the end leaf D andl raise it. This causes the rod H to draw upon the toggles G, opening them, and forcing the leaf O` into a horizontal position. At the same time the chain M operates in asimilar manner upon the toggles K, whnch causes thecorner leaf to raise into a like position.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The toggle-joints G and K, the double hinge J, rod H, and chain M, so arranged as to operate thev leaves C, D, Vand E at one and the same time, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES W. MILLS.
