CHARLES B. TUCKERAND L. S. BABBITT, CF CHICAGO, 1LLlNClS,ASSIGN CRS TO L. S. BABBITT. y
Letters Patent llo. 67,930, dated August 20, 1867,
IMPROVED BED-BOTTOM.
TC ALL WI-IOM *IT MAY CONCERN:
De it known that we, CHARLES B. TUCKER and L. S. Bannrrl", of Chicago, in -the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new' and useful limprovement in Bed-Bottoms; and we do hereby declare that the following is a t'ull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and 'letters marked thereon, in which- Figure 1` is a plan view ot` the under side of the bed-bottom.
Figure 2, a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same.
The nature of our invention consists in the use ot' rollers, placed under that part of the slats upoirwhich the greatest weight usually rests, and attaching the bearings which support the rollers to levers jointed to the sides of the bottom; and also in attaching rods to said arms, for the purpose of supporting coil-springs, used to force the rollers back after having been carried apart and towardl the ends of the bottoni, by means of' pressure on the slats.,
In order to give a correct understandingr of our invention, w"e have marli'ed corresponding parts with sim'- ilar letters and figures,` and will now give a detailed description.
A A represent the sides, and B B the ends` of the common slat bed-bottom, the slats being shown at 1 1 1,'
85e. v W'e are not particular as to the manner in which these parts ot' the bottom are made, only so that the slats are arranged to have easy bearings at one or both ends of the bottom,.in order that they may spring in the usual manner. I, figs. 1 and 2, represent supports vprojecting downward from the rails A A, for the convenience of securing the levers F; but the sides A A can be triade wide enough to answer the purpose, if desired. The levers F should be made of cast orwrought iron, and long enough to equalize 'the Weight upon the slats il, andxplaccd at such points on sides A A as will best support the trunk of the body, and have a swinging motion, as indicated by dotted lines X X, g. 2. BcaringsvS S, iig. 1, are made of round iron of suitable lengths, and covered with shell-rollers D D, ot' any suitable material, and then made fast to the levers F F. Rods E E are also made ot' round iron, and made fast to said levers F Fand used'to hold the ends ofthe coilsprings C C, of which any number desirable may be used, according to the size of the bottom. 'After this the levers F F can be secured to projections I I, by means of screws i i, and the bottom will be ready for use.
It will be seen from this descriptionvthat any considerable pressure on the slats 1 will cause the rollers D D to turn on bearings S S', move apart, and allowthe slats to spring downward, and yet have two transverse bear ings t'or keeping them even, by which means a light and heavy person can sleep on the saine bed with more easethan when resting wholly on the slats beneath them. .Again, the rollers will equalize the weight on the slats, which is not'the case with any other bed-bottom in use, and as a result a gain is made both in the convenience and durability ofthe bottom, without exceeding the cost of lany good article of a similar kind.
Having thus described our device, what we claim, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangiamento? the rollers D D, in combination with levers F F, rods E E, and springs C C C, constructed to operate under slats l, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
' CHARLES n. TUCKER,
L. S. BABBITT. Witnesses i Gao. L. CHAPIN,
A. HAYWARD.
