Description

i V @1t-tten tat-ra @about @Hirst WINFORD R.S.1TU1\ITE1=:,` or BLACKBERRY STATION, ILLINOI ASSIGNOR ITo HIMSELr- AND n.V T. nooiewunnt Letters .Pat-ent No. 78,876, dated Jima 16, 1868.v
IMPROVED BEF-BOTTOM.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, WINFORD R. S. HUNTER, of Blackberry Station, in the county of Kane, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bed-Bottoms; -andI do hereby declare and make known thatthe following is a full, clear, and enact description ofthe same, reference being hadmto the accompanying drawings, and the letters and iiguresmarked thereon, 'which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class `of removable spring-bed bottoms, in wliichthe mattress or bed is supported upon slats resting upon springs, or rendered elastieby their mode of attachment; and it consists ina novel mode of constructing and arranging thelpartssubstantially as hereinafter fully set forth. l
To enable those skilled in the art to understand how to construct and use my said invention, I willproceed to describe the same with partieul'arity, making referenee'in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in which;
Figure 1 represents a plan view ofmy invention,
Figure 2 is a side View thereof,
Figure 3 is a cross-section, taken at :v in g. 2, 'and Figure 4 is a cross-section, taken atthe line y in fig. 2. Y
Similar letters of reference in the several figures .denote the saine parts of my s nid invention.
A' represents a cross- '11, whose ends rest upon suitable supports at the centre of the side rails4 of the bedstead, and form the only pointfor supporting the bed-bottom Upon said cross-'sill A Yare arranged, at suitable distances apart, longitudinal slatsB, there being arranged upon the edges of the cross-sill, and between it'and the slats B, strips or blocks of rubber, a a,'as seen in the drawings. 4
Upon the top ot' the said longitudinal slats B, and directly over thesill A, is a bar orslat, E, firmly :secured and screwed to said sill, so as firmly to hold the slats Bin place, they being clamped between the. sill :and the bar E by the turning in of the screws.
4Upon each'end of each of said slats B, blocks, D,of suitable height are iirmly Secured by screws, or other- Wise as Shown, and Upon the top of said blocks D, over and parallel with the slats B, are other longitudinal` sluts G, upon which the mattress isdesignedto lie. Y Y V1 These slats C are secured to the blocks-D by m'eans of headed screws, or their equivalent, marked d, pass# ing through longitudinal slots c, in the ends of the slatsC, theiheads preventing the slats from being separated from thel blocks, while the slots'cZ permit a longitudinal movement of the blocks, with respect to the slats,.asY
the said slats are pressed down or rise with the weight of the person lying upon the bed, thus giving a free elastic spring to the bed, as desired, whichgismaterially augmented by the action of the spr-ings a a beneath the lowerV slats B. A
In order to keep the slats C in a vertical position, with respect to the lower slats B, so as to preserve their elastic force, and not break the ends ot`-thekslats from the blocks I), I extend a rubber or other elastic Strip, b,
across the bed-bottom, over thev centre, each end'of 'said strip being secured to` the end oi the cross-sill A,A andV the said strip being secured to the slats Qyrespectively, as shown, thus retaining the slats C in the desired position, and yet fully permitting the vertical yielding and springing of the bed.
Having described the construction of my improvement, I will specify what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
I claim 4the combination of the cross-sill A,.springs a a, slats B, blocks D, slats C with slots c, and elastic 'strap b, all arranged in the'manner and for thepurposes herein set forth and shown.
` W. R. S. HUNTER.
