Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN KENA, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
EXTENSION SOFA-BEDSTEAD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,939, dated November 14, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN KENA, of Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Extension Sofa-Bedstead; and I do hereby declare the sameis fully described in the following speciiication and the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a top view of' a sol'a with my in vention applied to it as extended; Fig. 2, an under-side View; Fig. 3, a side elevation, and Fig. 4 a sectional View in a folded state.
The nature of my invention consists in attaching to a sofa a frame-work composed of grooved bars which slide in each other and are capable of being` drawn out from the sofa, solas to form with the seat thereof the extent ofan ordinary bedstead, together with a series of slats hinged together and to said framework, said slats, when unfolded, covering the frame-work and forming the base for a mattress, the whole, from the nature ofthe framework and slats, being capable of being con `traeted or folded within the circnmseribing limits ofthe soia, and are imperceptible when not used as a bedstead.
In the drawings, A represents the sofa; B, the movable front board, to which one end of the framework ot' grooved bars C O is attached, the other end of the said frame-work being fastened to the frame ofthe sofa. The extreme bars of the frame O O have grooves D D and tongues E E, which slide in corresponding grooves F Fin theintermediate bars, C' G. The said intermediate bars also have tongues G Gr or stops, for the purpose of enabling the bars to slide freely, as well as of limiting the eX- tent of the frame. The said frame-work is sustained by feet G G' attached to the intermediate bars. To the movable front board is also attached, as well as to each other, a series of slats, H H, by means of hinges I I, which may be of metal, while for my present use I apply web, said hinges being for the purpose of folding the said slats when the front board B is to be pushed back to its placein the sofa. The front board has a projecting piece, J, and side braces, J J', which, with a corresponding piece, K, attached to the back board of the sofa, forms a receptacle for the slats and other articles when the bedstead is contracted within the limits ofthe sofa, as shown in the drawings.
From the above it will be seen that my invention will be of much utility for sailing- Vessels, hotels, and for families limited in lodging-space.
I do not claim the grooved sliding bars; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement ot' the hinged slats H H, as a movable bedstead, with the grooved bars O O, when in combination with the sofa, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature,
JOHN KENA.
