The object of this invention is to combine a sofa and bedstead in such a manner that the device may be converted from one of the above named articles to the other and vice-versa, with the greatest facility, and made to serve in either capacity equally as well as articles made specially for either purpose.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.

A A represent two uprights or posts which are connected at their upper ends, by a traverse bar B, and near their lower ends by a cross rail C. To the posts A A, there are also attached side rails D, D, which are in the same horizontal plane with the cross rail C, and arms E, E, are also attached to the posts A A, said arms being directly over the side rails D, D, and connected to them by vertical slats or rods a. The arms E, E, may be upholstered in any proper way.

` F, F, represents two posts which are connected by a cross-rail G, said rail G having a flap H, attached to its upper edge by hinges Z) which flap extends the whole length of the rail. To the cross rail G, of the yposts F, F, two bars I, I, are attached at right angles. These bars I, I, are connected to the rail G near its ends and they are each provided at the outer side with a longitudinal dovetail groove LX to receive corresponding shaped projections or guides c at the inner sides of slides J, J, which are provided atthelrouter sides with longitudinal dove tail grooves Z2? which-receive projections Z at vthe innerside of the rails D, D...The form of this dovetail connection, isshown clearly in Fig. 5, `and it will be seenthat it prevents lateral Iplay vor movementV ofV the slides and obviatesthe necessity for using crossfbars. K,YL, M,.represent three cushions which are made separately, each having a `proper frame e. 'Ihe cushion K is notf connected to the other two L, M, it is detached, but the cushions L M, are connected by hinges The cushion L, has two hooks g, g, attached to its front end one near each side, and these hooks are fitted in slots h it made in the upper surfaces of the bars I, I, and having a metal plate z' fitted around them, the inner ends of which serve as catches, as shown clearly by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. T'he lower part of the cushion M, is provided at each end with a metal journal j, and these journals may be fit-ted in either of two grooves or recesses 7c Z made in plates N, N, at the inner sides of the posts A, A.

The operation is as follows: IVhen the posts F, F, are shoved up against the rails D, D, the cushion M is in a vertical position between the two posts A, and the cushion L in a slightly inclined position forming the back of a sofa the flap I-I, being down as shown in Fig. 2. By drawing out the posts F, F, the cushions L, M, are extended and depressed in consequence of the connection of the cushion L to the barsl I by the hooks g litting in the slots h, and when the posts F, F, are fully drawn out. a bed is obtained, the cushions K, L, M, serving as a mattress. Ihen used as a bed, the flap H is raised and secured in such position by pins m which pass through the sides of the posts F, into the flap, the flap serving as a foot board. When the journals j are fitted in the lowermost grooves or recesses Z the cushion M, will be horizontal when the device is used as a bed; but if said journals are fitted in the uppermost grooves or recesses is the cushion M will be slightly inclined.

From the above description it will be seen that the cushions K L M will be folded and extended by simply shoving in and drawing out the posts F, F, and in consequence of having the dovetail connection of the slides J, bars I and rails D, and dispensing with cross-pieces, the cushions will form a mattress equally as comfortable as an ordinary bed mattress. If cross bars were required they would detract considerably from the elasticity and yielding movement of the cushions.

The cushion K is provided with hooks n n at one end to lit in the slots h h to prevent the casual movement of said cushion-and adjustable side pieces O, O, are attached to the outer sides of the side rails D, D, said side pieces being jointed as shown at o so as to unfold and form sides to the device when the same is used as a bed and admit of being folded against the side rails D when the article is used as a sofa. The side pieces O are attached to the rails D, D, by screws p p which pass through oblong slots g in the rails and admit of a certain degree of longitudinal play or movement of the same to allow the side pieces to extend vto the posts F.

I am aware that extension slides have been used in extension tables and have also been used in folding bedsteads, and I do not claim broadly such device, irrespective of the construction and arrangement herein shown and described; but,

I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

The arrangement of t-he cushions K, L, M, as herein shown and described, to wit: the cushions L, M, connected by hinges f, cushion L being attached to the bars I by means of the hooks g, g, fitting in the slots 71, h, thereof, and the cushion M, attached to the posts 'A A by means of journals y' fitting in either of two pairs of grooves or recesses 7s Z while the cushion K is connected to the bars I, by hooks a fitting in the slots h, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In combination with the cushions K L M, the adjustable and folding side pieces O, O, arranged as shown to form sides, for the article when used as a bedstead, and be capable of being folded compactly against the sfide rails D, when the article is used as a so a.
